Caraul ah cto Sot beds ects Product Design & Engineering Data Type 10109 Gateway General Information STACO ENERGY PRODUCTS CO .is a leading marstacturor of variable transformers, the most versatile and reliatle vot. ‘age controls available. Yeriable transformers have many industrial end laboratory applications as basic comporent to control voltage, current, power, hieai, speed, light, and loctromachanical fore. A basic STACO Variable Transformer consists of a single layer, magnet wie, winding on a toroidal core of laminated sil icon steel. A carbon brush, connected to an output lead, is rotated over @ precision ground, plated commutator track to tap off vollage at any turn from zero to the maximum ouput voltage of the winding SSTACO research has developed design features ard prop etary processes provicing longor lasting, more raliable prod: cts. Particularly Important is the high-temperature founda tion material bonding the coll securely to the core assembly This material, which has a high thermal transfer characteris: tic, dissipates heat irom the brush contact area, increases the hest-distribution of the core itsal! and provides the trans- former with greater tolerance 10 transients and short-term overloads. VOLTAGE RATINGS Basic single STACO Variable Transformers are rated either 120 volts or 240 volts. Higher voltage requirements are met by combining or gangng 120-valt oF 240-volt units. A 480- volt, single-phase application can be met with two 240-voh variable transformers ganged in @ series connecton. In three: phase applications, three 120-vot units are ganged in a wye Connection to result in a 240-volk line-to-line three-phase assembly. Similarly, threo 240-volt units are ganged in a wye connection to resuit in a 380-volt or a 480-voltline-to-line three-phase assembly. In each of these instances, the indi: vidual transformers, of cols, are identified with the basic vott age rating, ether 120 volts or 240 volts. When variable trans: formers ate connected in open dette for three-phase appiica- toons, two 120.volt units are ganged for 120-volt ineo-ne usage. For 240-voll open delta applications, two 240-wt Unts are ganged with the opan delta assembly’ In any of the above voilage applications, higher current requirements are ret by paralleling two or more unis inthe ganged assembly. EFFICIENCY & REGULATION In contrast to inefficient, wattage-buming resistive-type con- trollers such as fhaostats, STACO Variable Transformers hava an extremely low power loss and effciencies as high as 98%. STACO Variable Transformers deliver ny desired valage (within the transformor rating) with negligible variation in output volage from no4oad to fulFlozd current. Voltage drop tables ‘and a sample roguation curve aro providod inthis secton, DISTORTIONLESS VOLTAGE CONTROL STACO Variable Transformers produce an accurate transier of input wave to output circuit, providing distortionless voltage control (a requisite of many sophisticated electronic applice~ tions), PLATED COMMUTATOR SURFACE The commutator surface of each coil is specialy plated with precious metal, giving STACO commutators longer Ife, Increased resistance to corrosion and the capacity to with= stand greater overloads (while maintaining a constant contact votage drop), SIMPLE INSTALLATION AND CONNECTION Mounting and hook-up of STACO units is convenient and ‘easy, Most sories units aro dosigned with an acjustable shaft to accommodete either bench or pane! mount (adjustable to accommodate varying panel thickness). Tarminals aro easily accessible: screw, lug, quick-connect o1 solder design, Connections deliver increasing output voltage with either clockwise or counter-clockwise knob rotation, Manually oper- ated units have standard dials graduated 0-100 (percentage ‘of output voltage). LONGER LIFE WITH NEGLIGIBLE MAINTENANCE Procise design assembly o tho brush (at « constant pressure to a smootnly tnished and securely bonded commutator sur face) provides excellent mechanical performance, long Ife, and low-drWving torque. Brush replacement is seldom need- 6, butts easily performed. High safety margins of vhage, current-carrying eapacty and dielectric strength are why you can expect longer lif from STACO Variable Transformers. SMOOTH AND LINEAR VOLTAGE CONTROL STACO Variable Transformers are designed wit a fraction of @ volt per lurn. Close adjustment of output voltage is easy because the brush aways contacts one or more turns. Coll {uins ate everiy spaced, and output voltage is proportional to angular rotation. Full angular travel is approximately 320 degrees on all Series, VOLTAGE DOUBLER (DUAL INPUT) Most 240-volt models have an additional input voltage tap per- iting normal overvoltage output, weh half normal input vot ‘age, The output current must be reduced when the output vot ‘age exceeds 125% of the put voltage as shown in Fig. B on page 6. Product Design & Engineering Data TEMPERATURE & RATING The low loss of STACO Variable Transformers allows opera tion at full current reting @ ambient temperatures up to 50 degrees C (122 degrees F). In locations above this tempera- ture, the output current must be reduced according to Fig. A ‘on page 6. On single-transient loads and on-off cycled loads, output currents up to 10 times normal may be carried for brief intervals, as shown in Fig. Con page 6. A STACO Variable Translormer provides, ‘accurate, relable and lasting voltage control for a broad vari- ‘ly of applications, General Definitions The following words or phrases aro commonly used to dscibe characteristics of STACO Variable Transformers, INPUT VOLTAGE: The supply voltage 10 which a STACO Variable Transtormer is connected, FREQUENCY: All units in this catalog operate in the range 01 $00 60 HERTZ unless othemise noted, These units may be usod on higher froquoncios within tho limits shown in tho tabulations in the section “Operation al Higher Frequency,” pages. OUTPUT VOLTAGE: The range of voltage available at the ‘output terminals, CURRENT RATING TERMINOLOGY: To permit maximum utilization of STACO Variable Transformers, output ratings are given for both constant current and constant impedance loads. CONSTANT CURRENT RATING: Output current that can be carried regardless of output voltage setting. (Reduce, for output above 125% of input voltage, on volt- age doubler connection.) CONSTANT IMPEDANCE RATING: Outout current that can be carried with loads such as incandescent lamps or resistance heaters in which the current drawn is approsi- mately proportional to the applied votiage, increasing to maximum current at line voage. This rating applies only to appications where maximum output vollage is liited to line vollage KVA RATING: The maximum output current at maximum output line voltage multiplied by that maximurn voltage and divided by 1000 for single phase. Divide by §77 for thrae phase (1000//3). OVERVOLTAGE CONNECTION: Output voltage from zero to 17% above line votage (10% for 171 through 291 Series). LINE VOLTAGE CONNECTION: Output voltage from 2010 to line voltage VOLTAGE DOUBLER CONNECTION: Unit gies full over- voltage output with hall normal input voltage. Available on most 240- and 480-volt units. Reduce output current when cuiput vollage excocds 125% of input voltage. Winding sec: tion voltages are for a normal overvattage (or vollage doubler) ‘connection at input voltage shown, Line voltage connections, ‘ive 85% of these voltages (90% on 171 trough 291 Series) ‘Casod units with line cord may omit several cal taps, CONNECTION — SINGLE PHASE UNIT: Terminals aro pro: vided on most models for zero t0 117% of input votage (aver: voltage connection) and zero to 100% of input vollage «line voltage connection) CONNECTION — SINGLE PHASE PARALLEL: Up to nine units on the same shaft may be paralleled by using sultable chokes and circuits to multiply the current and KVA rating. Parallel operation of smaller ganged units is not recommend- ‘ed because it is usually more economical to handle rated loads withthe capacity of larger single units. (See specifica tion charts in each translormer series section ) CONNECTION — SINGLE PHASE SERIES: By jumpering the common connections, two equal single units (or two equal ‘groups of paraleled units) driven by the same shaft may be Used at double voltage (line-to-ine) in single phase series with extemal connection only to the input and output termi- nals, The load must be grounded. if an input neutral is con- nected to the common, an output neutral may be used ‘Transformer or loads need not be balanced to neutral CONNECTION — THREE PHASE OPEN DELTA: By jumpering the common connections, two equal single units {or two equal groups of paralleled units) driven by the same shaft may be usod at normal voltages (line-to-lina) in three phase open delta. Gne powerline, identical on input and out put, connects to the common, ‘The other input nes connect, to the two input leiminals, and the two output terminals feed the other output nes. (This connection is the same as phase series with neutral, except that here voltages on all input line pairs aro equal and out of phase.) X 100 (percont) Product Design. Engineering Data CONNECTION — THREE PHASE WYE: 8 jumpering the ‘commen connections, tree equal single units (or three equal ‘groups of paralialed units) driven by the sama shatt may be Used at double voltages (line-to-ine) in three phase wye. The load must be ungrounded. Input lines connect ‘o the three input terminals, and the three output terminals feed the output lines. ganged units are used in a system that ordinarily has a ‘common neutral or ground between source end joad, then the neutral or ground must also be connected to the common point of the ganged variable transformer assembly. Ifthe system has no neutral, then the loads must be balanced. Because of the 115.5% voltage on the individual single units, there are 50 HERTZ restrictions. See specifications for each Series. BENCH MOUNTING: Mounting of STACO Variable Transformers on floor, bench, or wall where the knob and brush rotors of single units (and most multiple units) are at the same end of the coils. CASED MODELS: All 10108 to 6020 Series models are available in cased designs (identified by the suffix "C? "CT" or “E" in the type number), "C" styles enclose only the coll, while “CT' models provide protective housing for both coil and ter- minal board. Knockouts are provided in the terminal board housing to accommodate conduit or cable connections. “E” styles include our NEMA 1, crip-proof, fully front accessible enclosures for our 5000/6000 Series. gr BACK OF PANEL MOUNTING: Mounting of STACO Variable Transformers with shaft passing through a panel. The knob and brush rotors of single units (and most rutiple Units) are at opposite ends of the coils. ISOLATED VARIABLE TRANSFORMERS: An Isolated Variable Transformer consists of two (primary and secondary) magnet wire windings on a toroidal core. The primary winding is electricaly isolated from the secondary winding. The input winding has 82% of tho turns ofthe output winding so tho out- put vollage can be vared from 0-122% ofthe input volage. UNCASED (OPEN CONSTRUCTION) MODELS: The basic models of all series are uncased designs. The type nutiber contains no pretix or suffx leer. These models do not have a protective housing for call or terminal board, Adjustable shaft dasign on most manually operated models permits back-of- ‘pane! or bench mounting, PORTABLE CORD & PLUG MODELS: Casod plug-in mod- ls have a ventilated steel case, line cord, receptacle, iluri- nated orvoff switch and fuse. A throo-conductor (SPN prefix) line cord and matching receptacie are available on these units. Plugin models are connected for output voltage in a Clockwise rotation and are available in each Series through the 2510/2520 unite. L SERIES: A selected grouping of variable transformers packaged in a deluxe aluminum enclosure, three-conductor line cord, plug, matching receptacle, pilot light, switch and fuse. An ammeter and vollmeter are available on the 10 amp model General Design Specifications The table below Isis generel design velues for each standard unit on @ per coil basis. The DC resistance is as measured from start to finish of coil winding, no load losses are actual core losses, and the torque valuies are the driving torque required to move the rotor and brush assembly. Using per Coil values listed, total DC resistance and core losses can be calculated for parallel or series connected ganged units, and total oxque requirements can be determined OPERATION AT HIGHER FREQUENCY [Al STACO standard Varieble Transformers are designed to operate within a frequency rarge of 50 to 60 Hertz unless otherwse noted. While designed to operate al 50/60 H2, Siaco Variables can be operated at frequencies up to 2000 Hz. The tebe below lists urit maximum output current rating a 50/60, 400, 1500, and 2000 HZ. 2 2 . 3 EFFICIENCY Erficiency curves are available from STACO or een be drawn similar 10 the efficiency curve shown below for any units by staring at zero, passing through the knae pcict, and reaching 28% efficiency at rated voltage. Tho constant current rating may be ‘drawn at any brush position except in voltage doubler circuits. For satislactory life, the brush output current of STACO Variable transformers operated in hot enclosures, or othor locations of high ambient temperature, must be limited as shown in Fig. A. Close exposure to radiant hoat should be avoided or loading should be reduced accordingly. For voltage doubler connections (at output voltages above 125 gercent of the input voliage) the continuous brust output current must be progressively limited (as shown in Fig, 8) down to 44 percent of rated amperes at maximum output volt- age. Protection of this type of usage may be approximated with a dual-element lag fuse in the lead to the the input termi- nal and with either a quick or slow blow fuse in the brush out: put lead, Figure B. Max Output Current — Dual Voltage SHORT-TIME CURRENT OVERLOAD ‘Athough STACO Variable Transformers are small and light weight for the large power ratings which they handle, brush currents up {0 10 times normal may be drawn for a bref time. The maximum on time curve of Fig. C shows the duration of ‘urge on transient currents which may be absorbed by a cold nit on motor starting or similar service. Protection for this level of service may be approximated by hydraulc-magnetic Circuit breakers with trip coll in the brush output lead. If the uritis hot from previous loading, such as repetitive overioads, it must also be allowed sufficient off tme as indicated on the minimum off time curve of Fig. C to prevent excessive tem- peraturas. If the time on is less than allowed by the “on* cure, the minimum time off may be reduced in accordance ‘with the following equation: OFF TIME (= CURRENT)? _ ONTIME: RATED CURRENT Protection for this level of service may be approximated by a dual-element lag fuse in the brush output lead. Figure C. Max On Timo and Min Off Time for Various Overload Current Conditions MOTOR-DRIVEN VARIABLE TRANSFORMERS \Motor-crivon models permit remote control cf large amounts Cf power. A STACO motor-driven Variable Tanstormer can be installed in any out-ofthe-wey space and the control slation placed where desired. Extreme flexbiiy in system design is possible because the control location does not have to accommodate the variable transformer assembly. Motor- ven units have the same electrical ratings es their corre- sponding manuaily-operated types ‘The motor drive is a compact intogral unit mounted on top of the assembly. On cased models, the motor-crive assembiy is, ‘enclosed and is provided with knock-outs for cable or conduit connections. The permanent magnet synchronous motor ‘operates on 120 volt, 50/60 Hertz single phase lines. Because synchronous motors are trequency sensitive, they ‘oporato slighty slower at 60 Hertz Product Design & Engineering Data Standard motor-driven models are available in speeds of 5, 45, 90 and 60 seconds at 60 Hortz for full range travel from z0f0 to maximum output voltage. A smooth, quiet planetary {gear unit is used for proper speed reduction from the motor to the STACO Variable Transformer shaft. Limit switch control at the lower and upper limits cf traval prevents overtravel. Tho: limit switches may be adjusted if desired. Additional limit switches may be added for operation and control of auxiliary circuits as required, STACO Auxiiary Switch Kit P/N 964- 0087 (avaiable separately, To specily, prefix the desired time of travel in seconds, and the letter "Mt for motor-drive to the Type numbor. For exam ple: 5 seconds speed travel = 5M1010B. Normally, one switeh is used to operate each Motor-Diiven STACO Variable Transformer. Any momeniary contact switch, ‘whether lover action or push button, may be used. If desired, additional switches can be provided to permit contol from any of sovoral locations. Master control cf to or more motor- driven unis Is a'so possibie using relays or mutiple-pole switches.
