Abrasive Blast Treatment as Surface Preparation for
Protective Coatings. Darren Green and Caitlin Granowski W.Granowski Pty Ltd ABSTRACT It is the case with any protective coating applied to a metal surface, that the quality of the coating is only as good as the preparation of the surface it is applied to. There are several ways of preparing the metal surface prior to application of a protective coating, such as mechanical means, chemical application and abrasive blast cleaning. The method of pre-coating surface treatment will largely depend upon the condition of the surface - rust grade or type of contaminants present - and the desired surface finish. The surface effect required for a coating to bond to the metal substrate will vary between metals, the formulation of the coating material, the method of coating application and the components purpose. Irrespective of the surface cleaning / preparation method used, the aim is to create a satisfactory surface finish, level of cleanliness, or level of roughness for the protective coating to bond to. This poster outlines the abrasive blast finish criteria as a preparation for the protective coating of metal components. CDW Granowski Director W.Granowski Pty Ltd P.O.
