LEARNING ?
or
An Independent Learning ?

Concept
Characteristic: adult and or independent
learner
Method: deep learning (critical thinking,
metacognitive etc)
Curriculum: problem base

Backgrounds
There are specialist even sub-specialist in
physicians !! Why ??
Medical science is a huge, deep & complicated
science
Its impossible to be learnt completely in only 6-7
years
Students will need to go on learning long after
be a doctors even through out their lives.
Later, there wont always be some one to teach
What should they do ??

Approaches of learning
Surface approach
Deep approach

Surface approach
Focus on memorizations & formulas
Focus on parts rather than the whole tasks
Little understanding

Extrinsic motivation
Example: cause by assessment

Questions:
Could you remember all of the content in the 6-years
study for a long time ?
Do you satisfy that only remember but do not
understand?
Is the science important only for assessment or for your
profession ?

Deep Approach
Learner:
Active search for meaning in trying to
understand with comparing, testing, &
integrating knowledge
Ability to relate new knowledge with what
already know/understand
Ability to relate a theory to experience by their
own words
Ability to distinguish evidence & argument to
generalize
Intrinsic motivation

Deep approach
Encouraged by constructive & experiential
learning methods
How to do a deep approach of learning ?
Be an independent learner/group work
Focus on personal development
Problem base or project base learning

Independent learner
What are independent learner like ?
Enjoy learning & seek out opportunities to learn
Know how they learn best & seek out these ways
of learning
Ask perceptive question
Bring enthusiasms & ideas in to the course
Can identify what is impeding & take step to
overcome the obstacles
Know what already know & know what they still
have to learn
Can identify their learning need

What should the independent

learner do ?
1.Taking responsibilities
They dont say : OK teach me
Begin with questions:
What are the goal of this course ?
How do these goals relate to my own goals ?
How can I adapt my work on these course relevant
to my goal?
How can I use the resources available (class,
library, etc)

Answers these questions by them selves

What should the independent

learner do ?
2.Making connections
Continually seek & make connections
between theory-theory, theory-practice,
theory-practice-opinion-value

3. Strategic learning
Take a deep approach to learning by make
their own sense of what they are learning
If necessary be a surface learner
Important: They know what they have to do

What should the independent

learner do ?
