The attachment to this service letter provides an applicability for each message, a description of the condition, and the Boeing recommended corrective action for each message. BACKGROUND: Several 767 operators have requested 2 comprehensive list and recommended action for known nuisance and frequently occurring EICAS messages. The attachment to this service letter provides the list based on the following definition. ‘A nnuisance EICAS message is a message that is set when the airplane and associated systems are operated in accordance with recommended procedures and system troubleshooting cannot confirm a fault. ‘These messages may be displayed as a result of not satisfying flight deck preconditions, anomalies within EICAS, or anomalies within an associated subsystem. Some messages, which are not considered nuisance messages under this definition, are also included in the attachment if modifications have been identified to reduce their frequency of occurrence. For example, even though system troubleshooting would confirm a fault for two of the conditions described for the EICAS message WARN ELEX, these conditions have been included because modifications have been identified to preclude recurrence of the conditions. BOEING AND SUPPLIER ACTION: Boeing and Collins have implemented software changes for anomalies within specific EICAS computers which contribute to EICAS messages EICAS BITE, EICAS DISAGREE, and TCAS FAIL, These changes and the applicable computers are described as follows, EICAS BITE Boeing and Collins have developed improved ARINC 429 digital data bus comparison logic to prevent latching of the EICAS message EICAS BITE due to the CU MONITOR 8000 0000 Page 2 767-SL-31-032 March 8, 1994 condition described in the attachment to this Service Letter. This improvement is applicable to the P/N $242N701-308, ~409, -603, -604, ~704, -705, -802, and subsequent EICAS computers. EICAS DISAGREE Boeing has also determined that disagree code 999, which latches EICAS message EICAS DISAGREE, is not necessary and has been deleted in the P/N $242N701-308, -409, -604, -705, and subsequent EICAS computers, Additional details regarding this change are available in the attachment to this Service Letter. TCAS FAIL ‘The EICAS message TCAS FAIL has inverted logic in the P/N $242N701-703 EICAS computer. Boeing and Collins have changed the logic for the EICAS message TCAS FAIL to provide an inhibit for the message in the P/N S242N701~704 EICAS computer and to correct the inverted logic in the PIN S242N701-705 EICAS computer, Additional details regarding this change are available in the attachment to this Service Letter. The Production Revision Record (PRR) and the production incorporation schedule for these computers for each engine type are shown in the following table. Service Letters which have been released to describe the product improvements and retrofit availability in the respective computers are also listed. Service Letter 767-SL~32-25, “Antiskid/Autobrake Control Unit Update”, dated November 25, 1986 Condition: ‘Two conditions of the EICAS maintenance message ANTISKID/AUTOBRAKE are known: 1. On airplanes with $283T001~25 Brake Control Units (BCU), airplane movement at very low speeds (below 3 knots) without right or center hydraulic systems powered may result in a communication problem between the BITE and antiskid cards and display of the EICAS maintenance message ANTISKID/AUTOBRAKE. The message “VLV 3-4” typically appears on the BCU display when the EICAS maintenance message is displayed. 2. On airplane line positions 1 through 159 that have not incorporated the reference b) Service Bulletin, the message may be displayed because of EMI intemal to the autobrake control card ‘caused by voltage transients associated with initial power application when RTO or normal autobrakes are armed, The message will also be displayed ifthe Antiskid system is not on, ifthe IRU's are not aligned and in the NAV mode, or if circuit breaker 6F4, LANDING GEAR, PARKING BRAKE VLY, is open. ‘Recommended Action: 1. On airplanes with -25 BCU’s, press Memory Reset on the BCU. 2. On airplane line positions 1 through 159 that have not incorporated the reference b) Service Bulletin, refer to Ramp Maintenance Manual 31-5 for recommended action, Attachment to 767-SL—31-032 March 8, 1994 Page 5 of 22 ALT AUTO 1. SM 2131-00 ‘Two conditions which may cause the EICAS status/maintenance message CABIN ALT AUTO I or2 have been identified. The two conditions are discussed individually because of the varying airplane applicability within the 767 fleet. Review of each condition described below is recommended to determine which of these conditions may apply to your airplanes. Applicability 1: All 767 airplanes Reference: Maintenance Tip 767 MT 21-011, “EICAS Message CABIN ALT AUTO 1/2 During Airplane Climb or Descent”, dated May 21, 1993 Condition The reference Maintenance Tip advises that an EICAS status/maintenance message CABIN ALT AUTO 1 or 2can occur during airplane climb or descent, Performing a BITE test on the applicable controller results in the AC MOTOR fault light possibly caused by momentary stalling of the outflow valve in the partially open position. This will cause a switch in control from one auto controller to the other and display of the EICAS message. Although the EICAS message normally indicates a controller self-detected failure, in this case, ithas not failed and replacement does not correct the condition. Recommended Action: Perform the recommended action of the reference Maintenance Tip. Applicability 2: Airplanes prior to line position 487 Reference: Service Letter 767-SL-21-46, “EICAS Messages CABIN ALT AUTO 1/2 Caused by Outflow Valve Actuator Wire Chafing”, dated July 2, 1993 Condition: ‘The reference Service Letter advises that wire chafing at the at wire bundle W1354 to the outflow valveactuator AC motor may cause display of the EICAS status/maintenance message CABIN ALT AUTO 1 or 2. Recommended Action: Check the wire bundles to the outflow valve AC motors for sufficient clearance with the actuator control arm when the valves’ gates are open per the instructions in the attachment to the reference Service Letter. Attachment to 767—SL—31—032 March 8, 1994 Page 6 of 22 COMPARATOR BITE —S 3422-00 Applicability: Airplanes where the Electronic Flight Instrument System (EFIS) symbol generators perform the instrument comparison functions. Note: These airplanes may be identified by an EFIS/EICAS Att Comparison Relay, K1297, shown on Wiring Diagram 34-22-33, Reference: Fault Isolation Manual Section 34-22-00, Figure 109, “Attitude Comparator Problems” Condition: Instrument comparison is required on airplanes configured for Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) flight rules, The Instrument Comparator Unit (ICU) performs comparisons of the Captain's and First Officer’s pitch and roll indications and outputs advisory messages if the differences between the indications are outside of specified tolerances. Since July 1990, the ICU may be deleted on CAA configured airplanes if the EFIS symbol generators are programmed to perform the basic ICU functions, On airplanes where the EFIS symbol generators perform these instrument comparison functions, the FICAS status message COMPARATOR BITE message will be displayed during any of the following conditions: 1. An Inertial Reference Unit (IRU is not aligned. 2. Both EFI instrument source select switches are placed in the “ALTN” position. 3. ‘The message will also be displayed, but only for 2~3 seconds, if the Captain’s or First Officer's EFI source select switch is switched from “NORM” to “ALTN” or vice-versa Recommended Action: None. The reference Fault Isolation Manual procedure advises operators to ensure that the IRU'sare aligned before troubleshooting the EICAS status message COMPARATOR BITE. Note that on ainplanes with P/N $242N701~406 and -304 through -306 EICAS computers, this message is latched in the EICAS computer memory. The EICAS computers perform a comparison check of digital data by means of the digital cross-talk bus between the computers. If there are significant differences in the digital data received by the EICAS computers, the cross validity test may fail and the EICAS computers will latch the CU MONITOR 8000 0000 fault code, Intermittent digital data from an airplane sensor (for example, the airbome vibration monitor signal conditioner) may result in latching of the nuisance CU MONITOR 8000 0000 fault code and the associated EICAS maintenance message EICAS BITE ‘Recommended Action As interim corrective action, do the reference a) Fault Isolation Manual procedure which provides troubleshooting for the EICAS BITE message and refers to the reference b) Fault Isolation Manual procedure if a CU MONITOR code is displayed during the BITE tests As final corrective action, upgrade to the P/N $242N701-308, -409, ~603 , ~704, -802 or subsequent EICAS computers which have improved ARINC 429 digital data bus comparison logic to prevent latching of the EICAS message due to the CU MONITOR 8000 0000 condition. Availability of these EICAS computers is given in the BOEING AND SUPPLIER ACTION section of this service letter. If the master caution light is reset quickly after illumination of the light, a nuisance disagree code 999 and associated EICAS message may be latched in one or both of the EICAS computers. Boeing has determined that disagree code 999 is not necessary and was/will be deleted in the $242N701-308, -409, -604, ~705, and subsequent EICAS computers. Recommended Action: ‘Asinterim corrective action, do the reference b) Fault Isolation Manual procedure to determine if the 999 code and associated EICAS status message EICAS DISAGREE is a nuisance. As final corrective action, upgrade to the -308, ~409, -604, ~705, or subsequent EICAS computer which deletes disagree code 999 as a cause for the FICAS DISAGREE message. Availability of these EICAS computers is given in the BOEING AND SUPPLIER ACTION section of this service letter, EICAS SCC s 3142-10 Applicability: Airplanes with the P/N 285N0432-1 EICAS Signal Consolidation Card (SCC) Reference: Maintenance Manual Section 31-41-07, Page 401, “EICAS Signal Consolidation Card — Removal/Installation” Cor The EICAS message EICAS SCC may be displayed due to an overflow condition in the ARINC 429 buffer circuit Note: The P/N 285N0432-8 SCC does not correct the overflow condition. Neither the EICAS status message EICAS SCC nor the associated ARINC 429 EICAS messages for the Fuel Quantity Indication System (basic) and the Tire Pressure Indication System (optional) are displayed during the overload condition with the -8 SCC. Recomm« .ction: As interim corrective action, do the steps that follow: 1, Cycle Warning Electronics Unit circuit breakers, WARN ELEX A and WARN ELEX B. 2. If the EICAS message is still shown, replace the SCC per the referenced Maintenance Manual. procedure Resolution of this condition is under investigation. Final corrective action will be added when available, Attachment to 767—SL—31-032 March 8, 1994 Page 9 of 22 FUEL CONFIG c 2841-00 Applicability: 767-300 airplanes prior to airplane line position 512 that are equipped with the ‘Simmonds Fuel Quantity Indicating System (FQIS) Reference: a) Service Bulletin 76728-0041, “Fuel — Indicating ~ Fuel Quantity Processor ‘Wire Change”, dated July 22, 1993, b) Service Letter 767-SL-28-18, “Simmonds FQIS Processor Block 2.0 Upgrade”, dated August 12, 1993 Condition: The center tank fuel quantity indication may fluctuate from 0 to 2000 pounds due to an FQIS software problem in the center tank “Hi-Z” wire capacitance. If this occurs after the override pumps are deactivated, the EICAS advisory message FUEL CONFIG may be displayed. ‘Recommended Action: ‘As interim corrective action, operators experiencing this anomaly may wish to incorporate the reference a) Service Bulletin which modifies connector D2706A by changing the E8-C8 jumper to an A8-C8 jumper, This temporary modification should be considered for 767-300ER’s with center tank capacitance below 18000 picofarads (pf) and 767-300's with center tank capacitance below 16000 pf. ‘A new Simmonds FQIS processor, P/N $345N001-033, provides final corrective action Production incorporation and retrofit information are provided in the reference b) Service Letter. Specifically, if this switch is operated during a BIT test while the display is not blank, the originally selected channel will remain in the “BIT” mode until it times out after 45 seconds. If the verify button is then pushed within this 45 second period, the newly selected channel will start a verify test, but the originally selected channel will remain in “BIT” mode. This disagreement between channels will cause A1 and/or B1 fault codes and the EICAS message FUEL QTY BITE. 2. The EICAS status/maintenance message may be shown if the VERIFY button on the FQIS processor unit or the FUEL QTY test switch on the P61 panel is pushed within 45 seconds of a power transfer or interrupt. Power transfers or interrupts to the FQIS processor unit start an FOIS initialization cycle which lasts about 45 seconds. Pushing the VERIFY button or the FUEL QTY test switch during this period can cause A or BI fault codes. FQIS processor power interrupts can be generated by switching to or from the engines, the APU, or external power, resetting the FQIS circuit breakers; opening or closing the fueling panel door, or switching the BAT/NORM switch on the fueling panel Recommended Action: Push the BIT test switch on the FQIS processor unit and record all fault codes, Push the RESET switch on the FQIS processor unit. Push the VERIFY switch on the FQIS processor unit. Push the BIT test switch on the FQIS processor unit again, If no fault codes are displayed during this BIT test, the system is normal and no further action is required 6. LAR PACK TEMP: Cc 2150-00 Four conditions which may cause the EICAS advisory message L or R PACK TEMP have been identified. The four conditions are discussed individually because of the varying airplane applicability within the 767 fleet. Review of each condition described below is recommended to determine which of these conditions may apply to your airplanes, Applicability 1: Airplanes with line positions 198-289 with S/N XX8-XXXX to XX9-XXXX, ram air inlevexit actuators with Litton P/N 15019 potentiometers Reference: Service Letter 767-SL-21-37, “Air Conditioning Ram Air Inlev/Exit Actuator Removals”, dated December 5, 1991 Condition: Operators with airplanes line positions 198-289 that have S/N XX8-XXXX to XX9-XXXX ram air inlevexit actuators may have Litton P/N 15019 potentiometers installed. Boeing and Allied Signal believe that this Litton potentiometer may have caused increased actuator removals and could be related to occurrences of the EICAS advisory message L or R PACK TEMP, Recommended Action: For the affected actuators, replace the Litton potentiometer with approved potentiometers which are listed in the reference Service Letter. Applicability 2: Airplanes previous to line position 448 without sleeving added to wire bundles W142 and W144 Reference: Service Letter 767-SL-21-41-A, “EICAS Messages ‘L/R PACK TEMP" Caused by P33 Panel Wire Chafing”, dated April 14, 1993 Condition Chafing of wire bundles W142 and W144 with a relay fastener at the rear of the P33 panel could result in the display of the EICAS advisory message L or R PACK TEMP, Recommended Action: Add sleeving type TPE 4X to wire bundles W142 and W144 as shown in the attachment to the referenced Service Letter, Repai any existing wire damage per the Dé—S4446 Standard Wiring Practices Manua Attachment to 767—SL—31—032 March 8, 1994 Page 16 of 22 LR PACK TEMP(continued Applicability 3: All airplanes Reference: Maintenance Tip 767 MT 21-010, “Altemate Start-up Procedure for Air Conditioning Pack for a Non-rotating Air Cycle Machine (ACM)", dated November 9, 1992 Condi ‘The EICAS advisory message L or R PACK TEMP may be displayed after the pack is selected on without being accompanied by a corresponding EICAS maintenance message L. or R PACK BITE. This condition has been attributed to sticking of the ACM thrust bearing due to water condensation, which most often occurs when the ACM has been selected off for some time. Recommended Action: Perform the recommended action of the reference Maintenance Tip. Applicability 4: Airplanes with Temperature Control Valves (TCV) which have not been modified to P/N 398750-4 Change No. 3 (Series 3) or to P/N 398750-5 Change No. 2 (Series 2) Reference’ Service Letter 767-SL-21-43, “Temperature Control Valve Improvements”, dated December 23, 1992 Condition: P/N3169859-2 potentiometers are installed in the TCV’s which havenot been modified to TCV P/N 3987504 Change No, 3 (Series 3) or TCV P/N 398750-5 Change No. 2 (Series 2). These potentiometers are believed to have inadequate sealing from contamination and inadequate lubricant for the valve operating temperatures. Potentiometer failure could cause the pack temperature controller fault TEMP CONT VALVE and an EICAS advisory message L or R PACK TEMP. ‘Recommended Action: Modify the TCV using Allied Signal Service Bulletin 398750-21-1396 which installs a new potentiometer, P/N 3175956-1, as described in the reference Service Letter LR PIMU M 7735G00 Applicability: PW4000 powered airplanes prior to aixplane line position 297 which have not accomplished the reference a) Service Bulletin modification References: a) Service Bulletin 767-77-0007, “Engine Indicating (PW4000 engines) — Analyzers ~ Propulsion Interface and Monitor Unit (PIMU) Replacement”, dated May 17, 1990 b) Component Service Bulletin 285T0607-77-01, “Engine Indicating — Propulsion Interface and Monitor Unit Modification”, dated May 17, 1990 Condition: The EICAS maintenance message L or R PIMU may be shown during 45 to 55 millisecond power interruptions during power transfer without any accompanying faults displayed on the Propulsion Interface and Monitor Unit (PIMU). The two conditions are discussed individually because of the varying airplane applicability within the 767 fleet. Review of each condition described below is recommended to determine which of these conditions may apply to your airplanes Applicability 1: Airplanes which have not incorporated Modification D (MOD D) to the Stabilizer Trim and Aileron Lockout Module Assembly (SAM) P/N 285T0015—116 and PIN 285TOO1S-117 Reference: a) Service Letter 767-SL-27-73, “Stabilizer Trim and Aileron Lockout Module Assembly Modification”, dated July 28, 1992 b) Component Service Bulletin 285T0015-27-06, “Flight Controls — Stabilizer ‘Trim / Aileron Lockout / Elevator Asymmetry Limiter Module — Software Change”, dated July 30, 1992 Condition: The reference a) Service Letter advises that the command rate from the -116 and—117 SAM’scan be. faster than the rudder ratio changer actuator can operate, This can cause a Rudder Ratio waming light annunciation and display of the EICAS advisory message RUDDER RATIO. Recommended Actic Retrofit the P/N 28ST0015-116 and -117 SAM’s to the MOD D configuration per the reference b) Component Service Bulletin. Applicability 2: Airplanes with Rudder Ratio Changer Module (RRCM) P/N 285T0014-103 (All ‘SIN’s) or P/N 285T0014-104 (S/N’s prior to D00753) Reference: a) Service Letter 767-SL-27-48, “Rudder Ratio Changer Module (RRCM) Design Modification”, dated June 19, 1989 b) Component Service Bulletin 285T0014-27-03, “Flight Controls - Rudder Ratio Changer Module Modification”, dated March 2, 1989 Condition: Only one of the two RRCM'’s is in control of the rudder ratio changer actuator at any one time. The RRCMin control normally transfers control to the other RRCM if'a power interruption occurs. The reference a) Service Letter advises that the P/N 285T0014~103 (All S/N’s) and P/N 285T0O14—104 (S/N’s prior to D00753) RRCM’s may inadvertently delay transfer of control which can cause display of the EICAS advisory message RUDDER RATIO. Recommended Action: Retrofit the P/N 285T0014-103 RRCM’s and P/N 285T0014~104, S/N’s prior toD00753, RRCM’s to the MOD A configuration per the reference b) Component Service Bulletin. Attachment to 767—SL—31-032 March 8, 1994 Page 18 of 22 ‘SPOILERS CM 2709-20 Applicability: Airplanes with -201 Spoiler Control Modules (SCM) without the MOD A and MOD B modifications References: a) Maintenance Tip 767 MT 27-017, “Spoiler Control Module Nuisance Messages”, dated November 12, 1992 b) Service Letter 767-SL-27-82, “Spoiler Control Module Modification”, dated April 27, 1993 c) Component Service Bulletin 285T0012-27-08, “Flight Controls - Spoiler Control Module Modification”, dated February 4, 1993 Condition: The reference a) Maintenance Tip and reference b) Service Letter describe three conditions which can cause display of either the maintenance or advisory level EICAS message SPOILERS on airplanes with -201 SCM’s. These are summarized below. 1. When the speed brake lever or control wheel is operated while hydraulic pressure is less than 1200 psi, the SCM will shut down and set the EICAS advisory message SPOILERS, When hydraulic pressure is restored above 1700 psi, the SCM may not recover if hydraulic pressure is low for at least 7 seconds and remains low during an electrical bus transfer followed by further ‘operation of the speed brake lever or control wheel, If the SCM does not recover, the advisory level EICAS advisory message SPOILERS will remain and the messages “SPOILER SHUTDOWN” and “PCA. XX” will appear on the SCM front panel display. 2. ‘The SCM uses three flaps-in-landing discretes for changing control wheel programs. When flaps are extended or retracted using the alternate flap drive system, the motion of the flaps may be slow enough to allow disagreements between these discretes lasting more than one second. This disagreement may cause a“FSPM FAULT” message on the SCM BITE display, despite the absence ofa fault, and cause the EICAS maintenance message SPOILERS. When the discretes are once again in agreement, the fault becomes inactive (BITE indicates intermittent), however, the fault indication remains on the SCM BITE display which maintains the EICAS maintenance message SPOILERS. 3. The SCM has three air/ground discrete inputs. If a difference exists between one of the air/ground discretes and the other two, such as if air/ground circuit breakers are pulled or if main gear proximity sensors are slugged, and the difference lasts for greater than 25 seconds, the SCM BITE may display the message “A/G SYS X FAULT” or “AIR/GND FAULT”, despite the absence of a fault, and cause the EICAS maintenance message SPOILERS, When the discretes are once again in agreement, the fault becomes inactive (BITE indicates intermittent); however, the fault indication remains on the SCM BITE display which maintains the EICAS maintenance message SPOILERS. Recommended Action: ‘As interim recommended action for all conditions, reset the SCM by cycling power via the circuit breakers C1531 through C1534, FLT CONT ELEC, at grid locations 11C7, 11C9, 11GI8, and 11G27 or by pressing the SCM reset button. For condition I, the SCM can also be reset by turningoff the hydraulic systems (pressure less than 1200 psi) for 7 seconds. ‘As final corrective action, retrofit -201 SCM's to the MOD B configuration per the reference ¢) ‘Component Service Bulletin. Note that some -201 SCM’s had the MOD A modification and some had both the MOD A and MOD B modifications incorporated at delivery. These SCM's are identified by serial number in the reference b) Service Letter. Three resistorsin each of the three circuits have values that are incorrect for the power supply of the card. The IRU ARINC 429 receiver circuit is most susceptible to failure due tothe incorrect resistor values. In addition, airplanes with wiring provisions for the Traffic Collision Avoidance System have exhibited an increase in signal noise levels which makes this circuit more marginal in operation. The circuit failure may cause the WEU BITE Module fault code D6 (Inertial Reference System word invalid) and the EICAS status/maintenance message WARN ELEX. Recommended Action: ‘As interim corrective action, do the L and R ASWC self-tests from the togele switches on the P61 Miscellaneous Test Panel on the right side panel to restore the WEU BITE module codes to normal and remove the WARN ELEX message. The P/N 285T1104-17 MOD C, 18 MOD B, and -19 configurations incorporate new resistor ae in each of the three ARINC 429 input circuits. Two options for final corrective action are as follows: 1, Retrofit to the P/N 285T1104-17 MOD C or to the P/N 285T1104-18 MOD B configuration ASWC per the reference b) Component Service Bulletin. Airplanes with the P/N 285T1104-17 MOD C and the P/N 285T1104-18 MOD B_ ASWC incorporated at delivery are identified by serial number in the reference a) Service Letter 2. Retrofit to the P/N 285T1104—19 ASWC per the reference c) Component Service Bulletin as described in the reference d) Service Letter.
