Chloe is a shepherdess's name often used in the poetic pastoral tradition. In the lighthearted amorous mood of the poem, the word sterbend does not refer to death but to the height of pas- sion, after which the lovers release their embrace; their eyes cloud over, and they can only sit together, ‘exhausted and happy.
