3 Protocols
Remember
1. Define the term `protocol': A set of agreed rules that control and enable
communication between computers in a network
2. Explain what `TCP/IP' stands for and describe the main features of this
protocol: It stands for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. It was made to
link computers across the world in case another war broke out.

3. Discuss why there are so many different protocols: There are many protocols in
the world, which are used for different purposes.TCP/IP is used on the internet and in
private networks, IPX/SPX made for operating systems, NetBIOS and NetBEUI which is
used to allow computers to communicate with a LAN network and AppleTalk that apple
system use for file transfer and printer sharing.
Extend: why have Apple changed from the AppleTalk to TCP/IP protocol? Apple
has changed to TCP/IP so they could communicate with other computers not just MACS.

4. Find out what IEEE stands for. What are the main IEEE standards for
networking? It stands for Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
In IEEE 802.11, what do the letters at the end stand for (e.g. IEEE 802.11g)?
