Extending the Number Line

On the number line on the board, we see positive and


negative whole numbers called integers.
Each negative number can be paired with a positive
number. These two numbers are called opposites because
they are the same distance from zero on the number line.

Are there more numbers on the number line?

Rational numbers are numbers that can be expressed as


one integer a divided by another integer b, where b is not
zero.

Complete Problem 1.2 with your neighbor.

Number lines

The National Weather Service keeps records of


temperature changes. The world record for
the fastest rise in outside air temperature
occurred in Spearfish, South Dakota, on
January 22, 1943. The temperature rose from
-4 degrees F to 45 degrees F in two minutes!

What was the temperature change?
