Should there be a limit to how

rich any one person can be?
Should the government ever
try to re distribute wealth
(make the rich poorer, and
the poor richer)? Why or why
not? What limits should be
placed on the accumulation of
private wealth?
Homework:
 Work on your Black
History Month
Project
 By now, you should
know what you are
doing
 Tomorrow, turn in
what you are doing
Freedmen’s Bureau
 Officially began
after the war
 Designed to help
slaves with the
transition to
freedom
 Provided many
services
Underfunded and
often overwhelmed
They began many African
American schools in the
south
They gave legal advice,
and helped with other
issues
Freedmen’s Bureau
 Tried to enforce
gender roles on
African Americans
 They required
Freedwomen to work,
unless they were
“worthy”
 Whites did not have
to follow this rule
Sharecropping
 Technically, renting
the land to farm for a
percentage of the
value of the crop
 In reality, a form of
debt bondage that left
a sharecropper owing
money in the end
Sharecropping
 Is not inherently
unfair
 Often made unfair by
what was in the
contract
 Often made unfair by
how much was
charged for supplies
Class work:
 Worksheets on
Sharecropping
 Work in teams
 Talk to each
other
 Due at the end
of class
