Worksheet Activity-Mesurements
Please answer the following questions using complete thoughts, and sentences.
1.) Where there any items in the room you were unable to measure due to the tools
you were provided?

(1)
2.) How important do you feel the video was to your understanding of how to use a
ruler. Is it important to be able to know how to use a ruler, and use a ruler
correct?

3.) What was the smallest item you measured in the room?
4.) What was the largest item you measured in the room?

5.) Can you think of any professions where using a rule would be an important roll?
Procedures and approximate time allocated for each event

• Introduction to the lesson The teacher will ask the students first if they have any
knowledge about what the item she is holding (a ruler) is. The teacher will present
on prior knowledge regarding how to measure items based on prior lessons and/or
their experiences outside the classroom. Students will be asked to collaborate with
their peers and discuss the different items that can be measured with the tool.
(10-15 minutes)

• Outline of key events during the lesson Students will be asked to write down
their ideas of items they believe can be used to measure with the tool (supplies
will be distributed to students once they have picked their pairs). Before the
students complete the activity students are asked to go online to view the youtube
entitled “Educational Video: How to Use a Ruler” video regarding ruler
measurements. The activity will begin with students practicing measuring items
around the classroom with the centimeter end of their ruler. Discussion questions
will be answered during this time with a partner. Discussion questions will focus
on allowing students to use the ruler in their surroundings, and becoming
comfortable with which side of the ruler to use depending on the different items in
the classroom. Students will be presented with the need to have positive and
cooperative behavior throughout the duration of the activity. If students are unable
to answer a question within their peer group they are asked to seek answers to
their questions from their peers first, and then from the teacher. The students will
have 30 minutes to complete the activity and fill in the chart within their peer
group. (45 minutes)

• Closing summary for the lesson The students will be asked to come a present on
one item they believe to be their best measurement of an item they found in the
room.
Post-Assessment: In order to know that students are progressing toward the identified
goals, and have retained the 80% accuracy rate of adequate retention. Some key ideas to
include in a rubric or other post-assessment would be to have students turn in their chart
in order to be graded, and receive proper feedback. (5-10 minutes)
