Component A Style analysis: Essay 40%

Outline
The assignment is to research the historical lineage that connects a post 1950s jazz
musician back in stylistic influence. One direct example we discussed in class is
Frankie Trumbauers influence on Lester Young in regards to sound colour
(sonority) and melodic approach. Charlie Parker memorized many of Lester
Youngs solos, which informed his own approach to improvisation. This is an
example of the historical lineage that connects these three players. You may trace
influences that do not adhere to instrumental/vocal groupings. For instance,
saxophone players are not only influenced by other saxophone players; Charlie
Parker was influenced by the music of Stravinsky.
I recommend that you choose an instrumentalist or vocalist closest to your area of
personal study and interest ie. Vocalists research vocalists etc.
Essay written component
Discuss the musical qualities that support your explanation of historical lineage.
In this essay you must refer to the musical elements of melody, harmony and
rhythm. Relate your descriptive ideas and comparisons to the texture and sonority
of the instrument.
1000 - 1500 words max with notated musical examples.
Component B: Presentation 40% (all students)
Give a 10 minute in class presentation outlining the key points of your research.
You may use a maximum of 3 minutes of musical samples to illustrate your
argument.
Note:
1. Audio samples must be provided on memory stick (mp3 player) clearly
labelled in presentation order

2. Video examples are not allowed (due to technical and time constraints)
3. Generally, students who have a thorough grasp on their materials give the
best presentations. Rehearse and time your presentation length (students
who read presentations or exceed the time limit will lose marks)
Component C: Bibliography 20%
Provide a detailed bibliography that briefly discusses the nature of the information
used in you essay/presentation: a minimum of 15 sources, 5 from the Internet, 5
from books, 5 from journals.
*Your bibliography must be included in order to receive a grade for this
assignment. Follow the APA guide for standard bibliography format.
*Any plagiarism will receive an immediate fail grade in accordance the University
of Aucklands guideline on cheating.
