Info Design of my Life

Kevin Watkinson
Information design can be found everywhere in the world:
public signs, store fronts, brochures, product packaging,
etc. The aim of information design is to convey images and
information in a creative and effective way. Of course, with
every design, we can find good and poor examples...

GOOD EXAMPLES

BLUE RAY DISC

The Blue Ray Disc typography can be considered
a good example of information design. The font
is a blue color (consistent with the product name)
and has an italicized, futuristic look. The idea
they are trying to convey with this design is that
blue ray discs are technologically advanced, high
quality prodcuts, which is effectively captured
with the product’s design.

SPEEDWAY
The Speedway logo shown above can also be considered good typography
design for the product it is trying to represent. We can see red and yellow used,
colors that are associated with a raceway, as well as the ‘Y’ in Speedway un-
derlining most of the word, which makes the letter appear to a speedway itself.
Also we can see a dimensionality behind the ‘S’ in Speedway, to make the word
appear to be taking off and moving to the right. For a gas station logo, the ty-
pography and design are effective in capturing the nature of Speedway Gas.

WANTED POSTER
The typography for this ‘Wanted’ poster is
another example of good typography de-
sign. The font and brown color give a feel
of an old western movie, or familiar with
the desert, wooden tavern feel. The typog-
raphy fits with the theme and the message
trying to be conveyed.

BAD EXAMPLES

MINNESOTA
STATE FAIR
This logo for the ‘Minnesota State Fair’ is an
example of bad typography design. The font is
extremely hard to read and even harder to read
as it is slanted. The lettering is very busy and in
my opinion not appropriate for a state fair.

SLEEPY’S
The typography design for Sleepy’s Mattress
Professionals, in myopinion, is an example of
bad typography design. The bright red, bold let-
ters seen in the design are not synonymous with
sleeping, and therefore unfitting for the message
they are trying to convey.
