Abstract
Device-to-Device (D2D) communications is a promising technique to provide
wireless peer-to-peer services and enhance spectrum utilization in the LTEAdvanced networks. The current system that relate to D2D are bluetooth,
Wifi Direct, etc. They are outband D2D since they provide local area serives
within the unlicensed band with resonable data rate, but low range of operation.
Due to the uncontrolled nature of unlicensed spectrum, it may encounter with
interference issue. So the possibility of deploying a technology that provide
D2D communication in a licensed band utilizing the LTE-Advanced system, in
which interference could be controlled and coordinated by network operator, is
extremely atractive.
In D2D communications, the user equipments (UEs) are allowed to directly
communicate between each other by reusing the cellular resources rather than
using uplink and downlink resources in the cellular mode when communicating
via the base station.Among the challenges of D2D communications are, the
discovery of a new D2D communication pair, a criterion for mode selection and
the optimum resource allocation for the new D2D pair. In the existing device
discovery an user triggers to discover the device, its proximity at that specific
moment and location. For feasiblity, network assistance for device discovery can
be implemented to provide the device discovery autonomously. Another area
of advancing is the mode selection, which refers to the type of communication

that will be utilized by a pair of UEs. This type of communication can either
be cellular or D2D. Depending on the Signal-to- Interference-plus-Noise Ratio
(SINR), the link will be established. Like any communication system, resource
allocation is a stumbling block in D2D communication. Several research on
developing an efficent algorithm for D2D is going on and is an advancing research
field.
