Nis mosque in the Ottoman censuses and in the itineraries:
five centuries of Islamic domination
Summary
Any attempt to create an accurate list of the mosque in Nis, their development, disappearance and
renewal, faces a serious problem because of the frequent lack of historical sources. Ottoman census books
are a prime source for the study of a given topic, but also the role of the itineraries, which are often not
subjective sources for interpreting this type of topics, is not negligible. Presumably, the first Nis mosque has
been builtas early asoccupation of the city took place, and it bore the name of the famous Sultan Murad I.
Subsequently, the mosques are built in accordance with the needs and abundance of the population. They
served as a gathering places of believers and the centers of the new suburbs, as evidenced by the names of the
settlements which were namedaftertheir central mosque. The most famous mosques were Bali-Bey, Pasha,
Hasan-Bey and others.
Despite the fact that none of the Nis mosque had a particulararchitectural value, as a symbol of Ottoman
dominationthey have left a lasting mark on the development of Nis in the oriental way. During the five centuries
of Ottoman rule, the total number of mosques was between ten and fifteen. After the liberation from the Turks
, for practical or other reasons, and in the spirit of the times, a large number of mosques disappeared under the
burst of modernization.To this day, there are onlythree preserved mosques in Nis left.
