CHAPTER 5 MBTALS~CEMBRAL VSTALS — GENERAL EXPLANATION OF MRCUANTCAL PROPERTIES TABLES EXEIAUTION OF MECHANICAL PROPBRTTES TABLES ‘The general allowable strongth properties of various motels are given in the tables at the end of each chapter. In genoral, these propertice correspond to the specification values and are the minimun which will be accepted under the given specification. Conversely, they represent the saximm values which aro acceptable for strongth caloulationss te Gonnsetion with thess tables the following notes apply to the various it ‘the nunbers below corresponding to the numbers on the tables: (2) Fey - Utinate tensile stress. (Fron tests of standard specimens). (2) Fey = Tensile otross at which the permanent strain equals 0.002. (Prom tests of standard specimens) « (8) Pep - Tensile strass at which the permanent strain oquals 0.0001. (Fron tosts af standard specimens) (4) Average ratio of stress to strain for stross below Proportions) limit. (5) Blongation - This factor is @ measure of the ductility of the material and.is based on a tension test. (8; Fy - Vatinnte (block) compressive stress. (Obtained fron flat ond compression testa of apecinens having an lf p of approzinately 12). (7) Fyy ~ Same as (5), but obte: ed from @ compression test. oy (8) Fop - Sane as (2), but obtained from a compression test. (9) Fo - Colum yield stress. Upper limit of the allowble colum: stress for primary failure. (See Sec. 14523) (10) B, = Sane as (4), out obtained fron a compression test. ~ Ultimate stress in pure shear. This velus represents the average skoaring stress over the cross section and applies $0 cases in which an actual shear failure takes pla: (Such-as the shoar failure of rivets or bolts) + (22) Fy, - uoiutus of rupture in torsion. This value applies only to st solid cyLiniricel specinans having a lengeh to dlanstes ratio of appracizately 19. (28) Fep - Proportional Limit in torsion. This represents tho shearing stress at which the permanent strain equals 0.0001, as obtained from torsion tests. (4) G = Modulus of rigidity in shear. This corresponds to the velue E for tensile strosces. Tt will apply in calculating the shear deflection of webs, provided that no wrinkling occurs. s<1 ASTALS ~ ceveRAL, (18) Hy, - Wtinate dosring stress. This value may be used for the detien of the comacting elensats of rigid jelats osiy aban veero nitheuk seeetLty 9f telative sorenont betmaon the pasts join, without deforsation of these parse, (28) Rooke Yonbor - These values are useful as @ moans of checking the wmiforaity of = material and as en approximate nouns of determining the ultinate tensile stress of wrought materiale, (1H) Brine Mnhor ~ these vetves serve the cane purposes ag ston (as) above. (Q7a) Vickers Numbers - Similar to Brinell. (18) Fag ~ Budurance Litt 2 bending. This value is the maximum attornating bending stress which a polished specinen ean Tithetand for a givea number of oyeles af conpiotely Zeversed stress. Based on rotating-boan tostss The value my be lovored by atross concentration, surface Tous corrosion, and overstraining. (Soe Soc. 1-416). (28) Py ~ Endwance Lintt in torsion. This value is the racine alternating stress that tho material can withstus fos a Specified nusber of complete reversale, (20) w = Specitie weight. Valuos given are ‘average values, (1) The nominal chonieal composition 1s given for reference Pee oe om ney ne, corzespemling Ary, Wary, Federal, or SAE specification for details as to chanical consosition, ressos may be In general, the values Listed ‘1s conforming to the specifications given.
