Dumoise was a doctor in a modern hospital in the north of India.

He married Mrs Dumoise one beautiful summer day and they
were both very happy. Although Dumoise was a very good doctor,
his wife got ill and died from a bad disease. After her death
Dumoise went on holiday for a month in the Indian hills to forget
his grief. He took his camera, his gun and his wifes favourite
servant with him, a lazy man with six children called Ram Dass.
One windy evening, on their way home from the hills, Ram Dass
saw Mrs Dumoises ghost. She was wearing a blue dress and she
looked very sad. She gave him a message for her husband; to
meet her on the first Monday of the next month in a place called
Nuddea. Nuddea was a large town in the south of India, a long
way from Dumoises home. When they returned home, Dumoise
told another doctor about his wifes ghost. While they were
speaking in the garden he got a message from the government
about a new job in the south of India. It was in Nuddea. Mr
Dumoise travelled to Nuddea with some other servants but
without Ram Dass. Eleven days later he died there of a bad
disease.

Wednesday 16th October

I woke when I heard a clock strike one oclock. Strangely the
dolls house looked like a real house, and I could see light in two
of its rooms. A lady and gentleman in blue were in the diningroom. They were drinking wine by the light of a candle. The man
pointed at the window with his hand, then stood up and left the
room. In a room upstairs I watched a nurse mix some spices into
a drink for an old man. He was sitting up in bed in a nightgown.
There was a drawer in the small table next to the old mans bed.
Perhaps there were some important papers in it?

Jack and Laura spend the day together happily, working in the
house and having a walk (e) in the evening. When they get back
to the cottage Laura is nervous and has a feeling that something
bad is going to happen. They play some music together and
then Jack goes outside (i) to smoke. It is a beautiful night and
he decides to walk to the church. On the way there he hears
the noise of people walking in the wood and on the path (c) but
he doesnt see anyone. When he reaches the church, he sees
the door open and remembers Mrs Dormans story (a) about
the marble knights. He walks in and is terrified to see that the
knights arent on their tombs. He runs wildly (b) across the fields
to the cottage, but a black figure jumps out in front of him. It is
Dr Kelly. Jack tells him what he has seen, but when they return to
the church together, the knights are there (f) on their tombs. Dr
Kelly notices that one of them has a missing finger. The two men
walk back to the cottage together (g) talking of explanations for
ghosts. When they reach the cottage, the door is open, (h) there
are many candles burning, and Laura is lying across a table
(d) by the window. She is dead, and in her hand shes holding a
grey marble finger.

a The mysterious bridegroom listened to this story with great
interest. Just before the baron finished, the handsome young
man began to stand up.
b He passed through me suddenly and, giving a terrible long
low moan of great sadness, he disappeared quickly out of the
narrow window by the back stairs.
c We sat down quietly together without speaking, and stared
thoughtfully for a time at the fine thick stone walls around us.
We walked slowly over to look at the sleeping knights.
d The poor old man looked terrible. His face was dark red,
almost black, his large round eyes were staring in fear, both
hands pulled repeatedly at his chest, and his thin lips were
white.
e The sun had gone down behind the dark mountains, and it
was very windy. Dumoise stood silently in front of the old
house, waiting for the useless man to come back.
I walked slowly and thoughtfully out of the front door, leaving
it unlocked. What a wild night it was! The purple sky was full
of dark clouds hurrying by, and a thin silver mist covered the
stars. The full moon swam high up, sometimes disappearing for
a few seconds behind the fast-moving cloud river and sometimes
shining down on the leafless trees which waved slowly and
noiselessly below. There was a strange grey light that night
which shone over all the earth.

I walked calmly up and down. Everything was perfectly silent. The

wind was so high in the sky that even the dead autumn leaves on
the garden path were still. Across the empty fields I could see the
silent church tower standing black against the sky. I heard the
church bell striking heavily. It was eleven oclock already.
