Questions to ask your student while reading
fiction/literary texts.
Questions about key details in the textThe key details are
the most important parts of the story. If certain key details
were taken away the story would be different.
o Why was _____part of the story important?
Retell stories including the key details
o What happened at the beginning? Middle? End?
o What was the problem in the story? What was the
solution?
Who are the characters? What is the setting? What are the
major events?
Ask students questions about unknown wordsuse the
story to try and figure out what the unknown words mean.
Who is the author? Illustrator? What does the author do?
What does the illustrator do?
Ask students about the pictureswhats happening in the
picture? How does it show what the author wrote?
