Typical materials used for the construction of distillation columns
include carbon steel and stainless steel 304/316. 2-propanol is a
chemical compound with relatively low corrosivity and is virtually non-corrosive to steel, stainless steel and cast iron at normal conditions. It may attack certain plastics, aliminium at high temperatures and steel if it contains water. Trimethylpentane is not corrosive towards metals. Noting the aforementioned, stainless steel 304 was chosen as the material of construction for our distillation column due to its sufficient strength and resistance to corrosion. Although carbon steel would be the more economic option, care must be taken to prevent any corrosive reaction from occurring during our process.
