(a) Explain why H = {a, b} , {b, c} , {a, c} is a subgroup of the group h(U ), i, where
(U ) and denotes respectively the power set of U and the symmetric difference of sets.
(b) To which known group is H isomorphic to? Justify.
2. Is the group U (20) cyclic? Justify.

3. Determine whether H = a + bi | a, b

R, a2 + b2 = 1 forms a subgroup of C.

4. Let : G G0 be an isomorphism between groups hG, i and hG0 , 0 i. Prove that if G is

abelian, then so is G0 .
5. Let H be a subgroup of a group G, and g G.

(a) Prove that gHg 1 := ghg 1 | h H is a subgroup of G.
(b) Show that H is isomorphic to gHg 1 .
6. Prove that

Q is not cyclic.

7. Let H and K be subgroups of a group G.

(a) Show that H K is also a subgroup of G.
(b) Give an example to illustrate that H K is not necessarily a subgroup of G.
