University Science Building Fines For Discrimination

from page 4A
Currently, the most popular major
among new students at Webster
University is biology, a trend that is
expected to continue. Studies have
concluded the St. Louis region will
need more employees with science
and technical backgrounds to advance
the regions industry and research
strengths.
When completed, the ISB will house
the departments of anthropology
and sociology, biological sciences,
international language and cultures,
nurse anesthesia, nursing, psychology
and the Institute of Human Rights.
Overall, the ISB will add 25 laboratory
classrooms, four dedicated classrooms,
a dual computation laboratory/
classroom, 51 faculty offices (with six
for adjunct faculty), 20 staff offices,
and a 129-seat auditorium. There also
will be commons areas throughout the
building for students and faculty.
This facility will enhance our
ability to provide best educational
experiences to our students, said
Julian Schuster, the provost, senior

vice president and chief operating

officer of Webster University.
When the ISB was included in
the 2012 universitys comprehensive
master plan, it was determined that
Webster University would need a
new electrical substation. The one
currently serving Webster Groves
was at capacity. That substation was
finished at the end of August. Work
is underway to connect 16 campus
buildings to the substation.
Other needs identified include the
expansion of the parking garage to
meet future demand. As part of that
expansion, the city of Webster Groves
required a left-turn lane be added at
Edgar Road and Garden Avenue. The
road work was finished in August.
Plans to expand the garage are
underway.
Additionally, in August of 2014,
the University installed a new chiller
plant in the lower level of the East
Academic Building. The chiller will
provide backup cooling for the East
Academic Building, ISB and other
buildings that are renovated in the
future.

from page 4A
which will back up our belief that
everyone is equal, he told the council.
Council Member Bob Sears said the
revised ordinance fulfills a promise
that we made when we passed the first
part of it, which we all knew did not
have any enforcement mechanism.
The
new
ordinance
comes
recommended by the human rights
commission as something it feels
strongly about, and that I feel strongly
about, Sears said. Im proud of it,
and proud of the work people did,
the caring that was shown and the
message that is carried about my
town.
The enforcement provision is
considered important because state
and federal law do not recognize sexual
orientation or gender identity as
protected categories under their antidiscrimination laws, according to City
Attorney John Hessel. Persons who
believe they have been discriminated
against on such a basis, therefore,
have no legal recourse except in
Kirkwood and the few other Missouri

cities that have ordinances covering

their circumstances.
These cities include Columbia and
Kirksville, according to Margaret
Duwe, former vice chairwoman of the
Kirkwood Human Rights Commission,
who said she had worked for five
years to enact a meaningful antidiscrimination ordinance in Kirkwood.
Court proceedings under the
new ordinance should be seen as a
last option to persons denied basic
rights due to their sexual orientation,
Duwe said, noting less adversarial
alternatives, ranging from person-toperson reconciliation to arbitration,
are preferred means of resolution.
The targeted behavior is not
just somebody yelling a name at
somebody, Duwe said. Rather it is
to provide recourse for someone who
suspects they have been turned out of
their apartment or fired because they
are gay.
Before the enforcement (was
added) we had no means of doing
anything about it; now we do, Duwe
added.

observing other practices during dental school and
later working in several solo and group practices.
I saw systems that worked and some that did
not, he said. I felt that by integrating all the
strengths of the various offices into my own, we could
provide excellence for our patients.

Visiting Angels Caregivers

Bring Comfort, Care &
Relief To Clients & Family

Dr. Vincent Fortunato

Promotes Healthy Living At
Premier Medical Specialists

Connect Hearing Dedicated

To Finding Customized
Hearing Care Solutions

People needing home care assistance in the Webster/

Kirkwood/Brentwood area are in good hands with
Visiting Angels Webster Groves.
Visiting Angels caregivers provide non-medical
home care and living assistance services, such as meal
preparation, light housekeeping, laundry help, bathing
and personal care, mobility assistance, medication
reminders, errands, shopping and inspiring
companionship. The agencys caregivers develop a
detailed care plan for each recipient.
Caregivers havent changed much over the years,
but with the availability of technology, they are much
better equipped through online training and skills
development, said John Garrison, who bought the
business in early August.
Garrison and his wife returned to Webster Groves
this spring to raise their young children.
At the same time I was planning my return to
Webster Groves, I talked with several friends who own
a number of Visiting Angels offices around the county
about how meaningful their careers were, Garrison
said. I wanted to find that same meaning, and the
timing worked out perfectly for our move back.
Garrison did find that meaning in providing care
that offers comfort to a family and allows individuals
to retain the independence of living at home, he said.
Clients tell him they feel comfort, relief and
appreciation for Visiting Angels care. In the end, our
caregivers are here to provide comfort and to allow for
continued independence for our care recipients.

Vincent Fortunato, M.D., a physician with the

Premier Medical Specialists group, enjoys educating his
patients on weight reduction and prevention of weight
issues. He strives to take time to listen to each concern
to improve the patients overall health. His goals are to
promote healthy living and prevent disease for every
patient.
Fortunato provides primary care services including
physicals, general wellness services and disease
management for patients age 16 and older. Board
certified in internal medicine, Fortunato received his
medical degree from the Stritch School of Medicine at
Loyola University of Chicago. He served his internship
and residency at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston,
Illinois.
Since 1990, he has practiced at various locations in
the St. Louis area. In 2006, he became medical director
of Hospice of Missouri Inc. He is a member of the
American Medical Association, the American College of
Physicians, the St. Louis Metropolitan Medical Society
and St. Louis Physicians Alliance.
Premier Medical Specialists is a group of experienced
bariatric (weight loss surgery), internal medicine,
geriatric medicine, family practice and cardiology
specialists.
The group offers physicals, general wellness services,
immunizations, screenings and disease management for
several chronic conditions.
Premier physicians staff many offices in the South
City and South County area.

Connect Hearing has been providing hearing

health care since 2007, offering hearing evaluations,
hearing aids and service, repairs and adjustments for
the devices.
The Kirkwood office opened this year, staffed by
Hearing Instrument Specialist Jane Manhart and
Patient Care Coordinator Suzanne Tobin. The
company is dedicated to providing outstanding
patient care and finding customized hearing care
solutions.
Manhart, who joined the Connect Hearing staff in
August, finds her profession a very rewarding one.
Its rewarding helping people to hear again and
reconnect with family and friends, she said. Hearing
loss tends to isolate people, and hearing aids help
them be a part of their surroundings.
She gets the most satisfaction in her work from
finding the perfect hearing aid to match the patients
hearing loss, lifestyle demands and budget concerns,
she said. My patients stories of how much better
they are hearing just make my day.
She relishes being trusted by patients.
Im honest and ethical, and patient care is No. 1
to me and they see this, she added.
Connect Hearing offers free hearing tests and free
two-week hearing aid trials on some models. The
practice accepts several health care plans. The office is
open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5
p.m.

Lockwood Chiropractic sends out a huge thank you to
all its patients whose votes and reviews helped make the

Offices (by OpenCare) and for helping Dr. Sharon Whalen
be named one of 2015s Top 10 Chiropractors by the
American Institute of Chiropractors!
We are so appreciative of our patients who have helped
us earn the recent designations, said Dr. Whalen, owner of
Lockwood Chiropractic. We emphasize personal patient
care and offer chiropractic health care, acupuncture,

Dr. Whalen is committed to building a strong wellness
practice based on the underlying principles of chiropractic.
A properly functioning spine and nervous system can both

body heal, she said.
The Lockwood Chiropractic team includes Dr. Kari
Keller-Fluchel who joined the practice in June. Practicing
since 2003, she focuses on headaches, lower back pain and
carpal tunnel injuries. On Sept.1 Lockwood Chiropractic

Seniors Home Care

Private Home Care Services
For Over 28 Years

Premier Care Orthopedics:

Providing High-Quality care to the
St. Louis community since 1969

Quality Chiropractic
At Back & Neck Care
Center Of Webster Groves

Over 28 years ago, Kit Whittington, RN, BSN, was

the primary caregiver for her grandmother. Whittington
was the only family available to assist with her care and
because she also worked full time, acting as the primary
caregiver grew increasingly difficult. She knew this was an
unsustainable lifestyle and hired an independent caregiver
to assist her. She soon discovered that her grandmother
was not receiving the level of care she deserved.
At the end of the day, I checked on her and to my
disbelief, I discovered the caregiver had simply not shown
up. My grandmother had missed her doctors appointment
and much needed meal. It was a debilitating moment; we
were both in tears, Whittington said.
In 1987, Whittington started Seniors Home Care
(SHC) to provide a family support system for older
adults. SHC employs an around-the-clock caregiving staff
to assist clients and families with achieving their unique
goals and needs. All nurses and caregivers are carefully
screened, bonded and insured employees (not contractors).
All employees undergo drug testing, a thorough
background search and complete a training program.
SHC offers flexibility of care ranging from a
30-minute QuickVisitTM to around the clock care and
Live-In care.
SHC has received an A+ rating, as well as the Torch
Award from the Better Business Bureau and is celebrating
its 28th year in business serving the entire St. Louis area.
My own feelings of helplessness and a desire for a
higher quality of life for my grandmother drove me to
find a better way to care for her. The motivation behind
SHC is my own personal experience and Ive built the
company on a solid foundation of 28 years of consistent,
compassionate caring for all clients.

Premier Care Orthopedics and Sports Medicine is a

physician-owned orthopedic practice consisting of 13
orthopedic surgeons, one physical medical and rehabilitation
physician and one podiatrist. Premier Care Orthopedics has
been providing high-quality orthopedic care to the St. Louis
community since 1969.
The 15 physicians at Premier Care Orthopedics are all
board certified/board eligible. Many are fellowship trained
in specific areas of orthopedics such as: foot and ankle,
hands and elbows, shoulders, knees, hips, spine, pediatrics,
total joints, trauma and sports medicine.
For the second year, the physicians at Premier Care are
the team physicians for St. John Vianney High School and
Notre Dame High School. They provide specialized care for

Back & Neck Care Center of Webster Groves has

been a vital part of the community for 31 years. Founded
in 1984 by Dr. Joseph T. Lane, it is the longest
established chiropractic practice in Webster Groves.
My wife and I grew up in the St. Louis community,
said Dr. Lane. Upon graduation from Logan College of
Chiropractic, I chose Webster Groves for my practice
because it reminded me of Normandy, the community
where I was raised.
Dr. Lane, also certified in acupuncture, treats each
patient as an individual, tailoring their treatment to that
which is suitable for their condition.
The staff at the Back & Neck Care Center includes
Lisa Minor, who schedules appointments and whose
pleasant voice answers the phone; and Dee, whose
upbeat attitude enlivens the Therapy Department.
Many of our patients enjoy the camaraderie we all
share with each other, said Dr. Lane. We make each
patient feel like family and occasionally go beyond to
make their experience a positive one.
The Back & Neck Care Center has had the pleasure
of providing service to Webster Groves and its
surrounding neighborhoods for over a quarter of a
century. Their patients generously support their Fan Fare
and Coats for Kids programs year after year, offering
donations to Webster/Rock Hill Ministries. Dr. Lane
and his staff are grateful for these contributions and the
opportunity to be a part of this community.

At Kirkwood Braces, Your

Smile is Their Specialty
Kirkwood Braces wants to know: Are you happy
with your smile?
If not, they have the answer for you. They offer
solutions to a straighter smile with Invisalign and
clear esthetic braces with experts in the field of
orthodontics.
Orthodontist Blake Borello, D.D.S., M.S. acquired
the practice earlier this year from Toni Goins-Crank
D.D.S. He understands there is a strong desire for
patients who have a modern alternative to the
conventional old-school braces.
With state of the art technology, people can now
get straighter, whiter smiles in a quick, esthetic and
comfortable way, according to Dr. Borello.
In orthodontics, we change peoples lives on a
daily basis, giving them the confidence to smile and
go out into the world and succeed, Dr. Borello said.
Dr. Borello gets his greatest satisfaction in seeing
the patients mature and gain confidence, sometimes
after just a few visits with our smile specialists.
Patient Susie H. describes the staff as amazing,
professional, caring, fun, intelligent and friendly. As a
40-year-old starting with orthodontic treatment, I
was scared, hesitant and wary about the whole
process. Two years later, it was one of the best
decisions of my life.
The practice accepts most insurance plans and
offers early morning, evening and Saturday
appointments.
Kirkwood Braces is offering complimentary exams
until October 15th for the first 47 people that call to
schedule their exam.

Hearing Health Cares

Mother-Daughter Team
Helps Patients Hear Better

Dr. Schachter Accepting New

Patients At Esse Health
Tesson Ferry Pediatrics

Hearing Health Care Inc. has been providing

audiology services and selling hearing aids and
listening devices since 1998.
Dr. Carol Bergmann founded the business to help
people hear better and improve their quality of life.
Since then, the practice has grown to three locations
and has added personnel, including Bergmanns
daughter, Dr. Alison Benner. The staff also includes
audiologists Dr. Melissa Kelly and Dr. Jayma Proctor.
Services include diagnostic hearing evaluations
for children and adults and non-medical aural
rehabilitation services. This encompasses hearing
aid screenings, evaluations, fittings and post-fitting
counseling. The practice also dispenses and maintains
a range of assisted listening devices.
The mother/daughter business uses multiple
manufacturers of hearing devices. This helps patients
find the best match for their hearing loss and lifestyle.
Technology in hearing aids has improved over the
years, and devices vary depending on the type and
severity of the hearing loss. One of the latest products,
Lyric, can be worn 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Bergmann noted that the average person with a
treatable hearing loss waits seven years for a solution.
Helping someone to hear again is so rewarding,
she said. It makes us feel good to see people hearing
things they havent heard in a long time.
Patients tell Bergmann they appreciate how we
provide the service they need and are always there for
them. They also appreciate how we work with them
until they are satisfied.
Hearing Health Care also has offices in Ellisville
and St. Charles.

Dr. Abigail Schachter is board certified in Pediatrics.

She is currently accepting new patients at the Esse
Health Tesson Ferry Pediatrics office which accepts
most insurance plans.
Dr. Schachter is a graduate of St. Louis University
School of Medicine and completed her residency at
Cardinal Glennon Childrens Hospital.
She joins physicians Dr. Charles Dougherty, Dr.
Matthew Dougherty, Dr. Catherine R. Remus, Dr.
Elizabeth Remus, Dr. Joseph Schachter and nurse
practitioner Karen Diehl.
The physicians and staff at the Esse Health Tesson
Ferry Pediatrics office believe that creating a unique and
personal relationship with every child is important for
developing lifelong habits of good health. That
relationship begins by establishing a relationship and
open lines of communication with the parents or
guardians of those children. Each child and family has
very different needs and this requires a very specialized
plan of action for each childs care.
In addition to personalized care, their goal is to
provide children and their family with the best possible
health care experience. From the moment parents and
their child step foot inside the door they will be
welcomed as part of the Esse Health family.

State-Of-The-Art Service
At Family & Cosmetic
Dentistry

Internist Timothy McCann

Practices Primary Care &
Preventative Medicine

Choose Watson Imaging

For Affordable, Personalized
Radiology Services

The Family & Cosmetic Dentistry practice can take

care of all aspects of dentistry for the entire family.
Along with owner James Schmidt, D.D.S., the staff
includes dentists Tyler Crews, D.M.D.; Christa Hopp,
D.M.D.; and Katie Meister, D.M.D. Dr. Schmidt first
opened the practice in 1982, and most of his staff have
been with him for more than 20 years.
Technology has made dental procedures quicker,
more easy and painless for the patient, said Dr.
Schmidt. For example, the practice now can do
porcelain crowns in one appointment.
The practice moved in 2014 to its current location
which offers state-of-the-art equipment. The doctors
have expanded their practice and now offer Invisalign
orthodontics and implants.
In addition to newer, high-tech procedures, the
practice offers routine services, including general
check-ups, cleanings, root planing, restorations,
dentures, extractions and oral surgery. The practice also
offers cosmetic options such as porcelain veneers and
crowns, teeth whitening and tooth-colored fillings.
Even after all these years, Dr. Schmidt still gets
satisfaction from seeing my patients smile, getting my
patients comfortable and out of pain, and getting to
know my patients and their families, he said.
As for the patients, they appreciate that they can
have all their problems addressed and not be sent to a
specialist. They get all they need at Family & Cosmetic
Dentistry.

Treat Patients For Bariatric
Weight Loss

Ana Danielyan, M.D., on staff at Premier Medical

Specialists since 2008, has a passion for working with
patients and helping them stay well.
I used to practice hospital medicine as a hospitalist, but
I really missed the long-term physician-patient relationship
and I decided to go into primary care, said Dr. Danielyan,
who specializes in patients over age 17.
Danielyan is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and
received her medical degree from Yerevan State Medical
University in Armenia. She completed her training at St.
Lukes Hospital, where she worked as a hospitalist for
several years.
Danielyans practice offers physicals, general wellness
services, pre-operative screenings, EKGs and disease
management for chronic conditions, such as hypertension,
diabetes and weight issues. She is fluent in English, Russian
and Armenian.
One of the many ways the health care field has changed
is in the education of patients.
You see more and more patients who are educated
about their disease management, which I encourage,
Danielyan said. I like when patients ask questions and are
involved in their care.
Danielyan follows her patients while they are in the
hospital and visits patients in nursing homes.
Being in primary care, you really start caring about
your patients health, she said. You know how important
it is to treat them when they feel healthy before they
become sick.
Danielyan is on the medical staff at Des Peres Hospital
and St. Lukes Hospital. She accepts new patients and makes
evening and same-day appointments available. Her office
accepts most insurance plans, including Health Insurance
Market Place.
