The Anthropology of Food, University of Maine S16

An introductory course designed to expose students to the different ways in which anthropologists think
about food as a way to understand human origins, behavior, and cultural diversity. Themes include:
food procurement strategies; food as it pertains to power dynamics, warfare, gender relations and
identity; and the role of food in environmental and sustainable development policy-making.
Sustainability, Justice, & Policy in Alternative Food Systems, College of the Atlantic F15
An interdisciplinary course designed to expose students to a range of alternative food systems and
engage them in thinking critically about the relationships between sustainability, policy, social and
environmental justice, and food production. Topics include both formal and informal agricultural and
fisheries policy, as well as consumer, producer, and state sponsored food systems alternatives.
