Vivekananda Kendra Kanyakum Assam Prant Mananeeya Eknathji Janma Shati Parva Dharma: The Soul of India ‘Swami Vivekananda realized on the Rock at Kanyakumari that ‘our Dharma is not the cause of our downfall but our Understanding of Dharma has got narrowed down and thats the reason of degeneration. ‘What is Dharma? What is considered as Dharma today? Who is considered as, Dharmik? The one who goes to temples, does elaborate poojas, wears Rudraksha, does vrata, fast etc goes for Katha-kirtan etc. If thatis Dharma, then we see that Dharmik awakenings increasing. But do we see the symptoms of itn society? We see more degradation, corruption, loss of character, lack of fellow feeling, It means the Dharma is wrongly understood. If people are Dharmik in society then the symptoms to be seen in society would be fellow feeling, upright character, discipline, Integrity etc. ‘So what is Dharma? First let us see what is the Truth of existence? Expression of Oneness. Everything is interconnected, interrelated and interdependent. The extended form of man is, family, society, nation and whole creation, Man is integral part of family, society, nation and whole creation. Dharma is that behavior, actions which connect us, nurtures our connections With, fulfills our duties towards our extended forms like family, society, nation and whole creation. Aspects of Dharma Samanya Dharma — What I do not like others doing to me - | should not be doing it to others. Because others are the extended form of own self. So | do not hurt, cheat, betray others Vishesh Dharma - When my duty to my two forms clash, then sacrificing the interest ofthe smaller identity for the good of the bigger identity is Vishesh Dharma. if personal interest clash with the interest of the family, then personal interests are sacrificed for the good of the family If interest of the family clash with the Interest of the society, then we have to sacrifice the interest of the family Dharma is not in dogmas — like do this and do not do that. Example of Rama and Bharat. Rama follows his parents and called {as Dharmatma, Bharat does not obey his parents and still called as Dharmatma. So Dharma involves sacrifice and the Hitam or well-being of the bigger identity, bigger collective. ‘So what | am doing whether itis Dharma or not can be tested ‘on two touch-stones. Is there sacrifice, selflessness involved and Is tin the interest of the bigger identities? Manav Dharma ‘Swami Vivekananda: The truth does not pay homage to society Society has to pay homage to the truth or perish. Oneness is the truth of the existence so the interconnectedness is the truth of the existence. Excessive individualism (not caring about nurturing, of our contacts with the bigger forms) can lead to destruction. If human behavior goes against Dharma, then destruction is sure. Practice of Dharma is required for the protection of mankind. Science is also telling the same thing. Dharma is not related to sects or the formand name of God that we pray. Dharma is eternal as It is based on the eternal truth of existence of interconnectedness and interdependence. Hindu people understood it, nurtured it, practiced it so much so that it became synonymous with Hindu Dharma, Like for example— Photocopying, ‘machine as Xerox machine, any iron cupboard as Godre| cupboard. Constraints in practice of Dharma Dharma got translated as religion so lot of confusion. Secular got translated as Dharma Nirapeksha ~ Nothing to do with Dharma. Secularism actually was the European concept. In European Context -Two institutions - government and Church fighting for power ultimately came to compromise formula that religious functions would be taken care of by Church and secular functions would be taken care of by government (whether of Monarchial or democratic). This compromise formula was called as secularism. Even today certain Churches of some specific denominations ate allowed to function in the followers of other Churches in Europe Yato Dharma Tato Jaya Wherever the smaller identity is ready to sacrifice for the good of the higher identity, there the victory is sure. Examples are Mahabharat, Ramayana, Shivaji etc. The Need of the Hour We should inculeate the vision of oneness in our children. The excellence should be manifested in our life. Importance to practice ‘of Dharma is for sustainable development of the self and the Samashtl ‘Swami Vivekananda told Dharma is the life center of Bharat — igof Oneness, sensitivity, readiness to sacrifice, selflessness then India can ‘emerge as the Guru of the world, IfDharma is there in our life means if there isfeel Activities at Kamrup Vibhag (Kamrup Rural and Kamrup Metro) Personality Development Camp at Guwahati ‘Guwahati Mahanagar has organized five nonresidential Personality Development Camps of two days at Panbazar {total participants 60), Borthakurmil (total participants 53), Chandmari (total participants 43), ‘Ambikagirinagar (total participants 22) and Noonmati total participants 155).
