VMMS 2015 Media Center Rubric

Overview of VMMS Media

After careful consideration of the Target Indicators and Categories of the Judy Serritella
Exemplary Library Media Program Self-Evaluation Rubric, the media specialist is able to find
areas of continued success as well as areas of improvement.
Currently the media center is doing an Exemplary job in several areas including the use of its
resources to support reading, the use of full-time support staff, electronic distribution system,
white boards in all classrooms, resources online for access via Internet , and support from the
administrators and county-level officials. However, there is always room for improvement.
One area that was Basic was Section 15, which deals with the online resource GALILEO.
Currently students and teachers are provided the password for access, but no classes are
taught to instruct faculty on how to incorporate GALILEO as an important resource during
research and class projects. Students receive an overview of the resource during the media
center orientation class, but further collaboration is needed between the media specialist and
the faculty to integrate GALILEO more fully into use. The media specialist will begin by creating
a presentation on GALILEO for the next faculty meeting as well as create bookmarks with tips
for students. As the media specialist and classroom teachers collaborate, they can include
GALILEO more often as the search tool.
An area that was Proficient was Section 5: Services are provided to students who have
diverse learning abilities, styles, and needs. In order to move this area to the area of
Exemplary, the media specialist and teachers will look at current student data in STAR

Renaissance (reading levels, grade equivalency levels, Lexile scores, and summative data) to
design more individualized work for students. The media specialist will be able to offer the
classroom teacher support through extension activities as well as remediation activities to bring
all students to grade level or higher in the area of Reading.

Please contact me with questions or to discuss the rubric findings in more detail.
