In Response to your Article Mother Tongue
Dear Amy Tan,
Hope you are doing well! I had read your article Mother Tongue and honestly I say that
it was the best article I had read. I think this article belongs to all of us who come here to stay or
study in United States in America and has a weak background in English.
I am an international student studying here in America. Honesty, my mother tongue is
Arabic. When I first came here, I was struggling a lot in communicating in English. I have some
of my nephews here and they are born and raised up here. To my surprise, they are very good and
fluent in English as well as in Arabic.
I can feel your side but of the story but I can feel a lot in your mothers side story. To
be frank, I had been in that situation and I can understand how a person feels when he is not able
to communicate in the basic language. I was very shameful in front of my nephews seeing them
talking freely and frankly and I couldnt able to understand nor respond to anyone of their
queiries.

Although I studied English as a second language in my country, I feel that the accent and
the way of speaking in English also differ. Here in America, we speak in American Accent, but
the accent in England and in Australia and India is way different from America.
Reading this story had led me to know about the feeling of a person from the other side. I
am really thankful for you to bring up this story to me and expect more stories from you in
future!
Thank you for reading my response and I hope to hear from you!

Yours Sincerely,

Nasser Alameri
