VITAMINS
o Are organic compounds that are required in small

amounts for maintaining good health.

o Are not energy providing food


o Are divided in to fat soluble and water soluble
o Diseases caused by lack of vitamins are called vitamin

deficiency diseases

o Can be obtained by eating a varied diet

CLASSES OF FOOD : CARBOHYDRATES


Carbohydrates are organic compounds made up of

elements such as carbon,hydrogenand oxygen

Carbohydrates include starch, cellulose, sugars, and

glycogen which are found in food.

Sugars are found in cakes,chocolates,fruits and soft drink


Starch is found in rice bread potatoes and cereals
Cellulose is found in vegetables,fruits and cereals
Glycogen or animal starch is stored in our liver muscles

SUGARS

Sugar receives blame for many health problems, but without it,

your body would cease to function properly. Naturally occurring


sugars, such as those found in fruit, and lactose, or milk sugar,
come from sources that benefit your diet. However, the sugars
and syrups added during food processing and preparation, called
added sugars, are viewed as a detriment to a healthy diet.

Functions:
The onlyfunction of starchin the human diet is to
convert into glucose for energy

CELLULOSE

Functions:
cellulose is also a major source of needed fiber in our
diet.

GLYCOGEN

Functions:
Glycogen is made and stored primarily in the cells of
the liver and the muscles, and functions as the
secondary long-term energystorage

DEFICIENCY OF CARBOHYDRATES
Many people avoid carbohydrates due to concerns

about weight gain, but carbs are needed for the body
to function. Carbohydrates are your bodys main
energy source and necessary for you to think and
remain active. According to MayoClinic.com,
carbohydrates should make up 45 to 65 percent of
your daily caloric intake. Skipping too much on
carbohydrates can cause several health problems.
