September 2015
It is a privilege to serve as principal of Atkins High School. Our faculty and staff are committed to
developing a culture that is student-focused, to increase student achievement and to instill good
citizenship skills.
This year, we are kicking off a student recognition/incentive program that is based on the acronym of
PRIDE. P stands for being positive; R is for showing respect; I is for exhibiting integrity; D is for
being dependable; and E is for demonstrating effort. Students receive Red Devil Points for behaviors
that represent these attributes and are recognized in some way.
All juniors will be taking the ACT on March 1, and all freshmen and sophomores will take the ACT Aspire
in the spring. We have purchased PLATO software to assist them (and our bound-for-college seniors) in
improving their skills. During our advisory times, students are completing these modules and also
participating in SSR (Silent Sustained Reading). We are building a culture of learners, one that values
knowledge and growth.
Our clubs and organizations have been meeting and making their plans for an exciting school year.
Whether it is at a ballgame, a Quiz Bowl tournament, or a HOFNOD fishing trip, our students will be
displaying their Red Devil Pride!
If you have a question, would like to volunteer, or have any suggestions, please feel free to contact me.
Best,

Mary Beth Cox,

Principal
