Mme Thbeaus Classroom Newsletter

Welcome Back
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Welcome back to a new and exciting
school year. A newsletter will be sent
to you every term to keep you up to
date on classroom expectations as well
as curriculum planning for each reporting period.

Dates to remember

My classroom routines and rules were

explained on the very first day of
school. These can be summed up in
three thoughts : respect, responsibility and right choices.

Students are responsible for using

their agenda daily to organize their
activities and especially to write their
homework. I will write my initials in
October 8th & 9thNo
the agenda everyday before they
leave school and I ask that you do the
school (Professional
same at home to verify that they have

completed everything. I might also
use the agenda as a means of comOctober 12th No

dents should have homework every
night of the week since they are

grade level this year). They also have
a test on10 vocabulary words every

they have sentences to write on a
weekly basis. Plus, they should be

up that I will be updating on a weekly basis to keep you and your child
informed regarding up-coming test
or assignments. I plan on including
documents with extra practice sheets
that you can use, a list of weekly
spelling words, videos of me completing math problems the way it was
taught in class and models of what a
project or assignment should look like.

Two big factors that I think will determine how fast your child will succeed and feel confident in speaking
French is if he or she makes the necessary effort and has a positive attitude. Starting next week, students
are to speak in French, as best as
they can, at all times in my classroom. I will keep track of this by
having them sign their initials on a
posted class list when they forget to
speak French.

F.I.L.A. (French)
We are starting out the year by reviewing certain words and expression that will be useful to students.
We will soon begin our first unit
which is based on family and self.
The focus for every unit will begin
with oral communication, followed
by reading and finally writing.

English Language Arts

Mrs. Weatherbee will be teaching
ELA this year. In ELA, we are focusing on the three major outcomes
which are reading, writing and
speaking. This school year, each
student will be required to read 6
self-selected novels/books. After
reading each of the selections, each
student will be required to write and
present a Book Talk to the class,
briefly outlining the plot, main character, setting, genre and their personal opinion of that book by giving
it a mark out of 5 stars.
We will be concentrating on nonfiction writing for the first part of the
year with a unit on journalism. Due
to the small amount of time allotted
for ELA, homework will be assigned.
We will be writing about Remembrance and Christmas. Each student
should be reading at home every
day for at least fifteen minutes and
collecting strong words to include in
his/her own writing.
We are participating in a class blog
on the website: kidblog.org. This is
a closed site and only I and the students have access to the entries of

other students. Ultimately, the goal

is to have students work published.
At parent/teacher meetings this
year, your son or daughter will lead
the conference as they discuss their
progress and goals in each of the
areas of mentioned above.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Ms Weatherbee at 538-2121.

Math
Students began the year by completing a screener to assess their
ability to work with numbers. We
are now doing review of numbers in
French. Next, we will work on place
value, followed by multiplication
and division of decimals. After that,
we will work with equations and
letter variables, followed by developing and applying a formula to
find the perimeter, the area and the
volume of different shapes. Then,
we will identify and plot points on a
Cartesian plan.

Social Studies
This years theme is all about culture.
Students will learn about the different cultures in the world as well as
their own. To begin, students will
learn what is culture, how it is transmitted and how it affects our daily
lives.

Science
The first unit out of four that students will explore is: Diversity of Life
. In this unit, students will especially
learn about the animal kingdom
and be able to classify them into
two categories, either vertebrates or
invertebrates. They will furthermore
explore the differences between the
various types of vertebrates
(mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish). Then they will lalso
earn about micro-organisms.
