MCHE 461 Assignment No. 2: The Basics Assigned: August 26, 2015 Due: September 16, 2015 1. Water, available at 250F and 500 psia, is to be pumped to 1500 psia using a positive: displacement pump and a direct-drive 480Vac 3-phase motor. Ifit is required that the pump deliver 50,000 lbm/hr of water, estimate the motor size (in hp) required. 2. The turbine expander of a large, closed-cycle single-shaft Brayton power system (i.e., similar to a gas turbine system except that it uses air confined within the system as the working fluid rather than combustion products expelled at the exhaust) receives air at 2200F and 600 psia and expands it to 50 psia. a. Estimate the power required to drive the axial-flow compressor (in kW-hr/lbm of air) ifthe air entering the compressor is at 50 psia and 150F and is delivered to the air heater at 600 psia, b. If the compressor is direct-driven by the expander shaft (hence the term "single-shaft"), how much net power (in kW-hr/lbm) at the expander output shaft is available to be delivered to a generator? 3. 6000 Ibmi/hr of saturated steam at atmospheric pressure is delivered to a water-cooled shell-and-tube surface condenser designed to deliver saturated liquid at one atmosphere. If water is available at 90F and a temperature approach no less than SOF anywhere in the exchanger is specified, a, How much cooling water (in gal/min) is required for this service? b. Estimate the necessary exchanger surface area (in ft). c. Ifa subcooler were added in series with the condenser using the cooling water leaving the condenser, how much additional surface are would be required to subcool the condensate by an additional 20F? 4. No. 6 fuel oil (also variously called "Bunker C" and "residual") is to be burned ina steady-state, steady flow combustion process at atmospheric pressure. a. At 30% excess air, estimate the combustion air requirement (in sefim/Ibm of oil). b. Ifthe combustion products emerge at 350F and atmospheric pressure, how much energy (in BTU/Ibm of oil) may be extracted from this process? The oil and air may be assumed to be at 77P. 5. Suppose the process in question 4 above results in a maximum combustion zone temperature of 2400F. Estimate the equilibrium production of nitric oxide (NO, in ppm vi).
