POSTULATIONAL THERMODYNAMICS
1. Explain the terms
(a) Intensive parameters
(b) Differential form of the fundamental relation
2. The fundamental relation for particular system is given by
U=

CS 3
NV

where C is a positive constant.

(a) Obtain the three intensive parameters T,P and u and write the three
equations of state of the system.
(b) Show that the three equation of states are homogeneous functions of
zeroth order.
(c) Express u as a function of T and P.
3. Consider an isolated composite system consisting of two subsystem a and
b which are separated from each other by a rigid, adiabatic and impermeable boundary. The extensive parameters of the subsystems are
U a = 7.2M J; V a = 1m3 ; N a = 1kmol; U b = 1m3 andN b = 2kmol. The
fundamental relation
1
S = K(U V N ) 3
where S is in kJ/K, U in kJ, V in m3 , N is a constant with appropriate dimension is valid for both the subsystems. If the internal boundary
is made diathermal determine the final equilibrium value of U a , U b and
temperature. Assume K=6x105 .
4. Consider an isolated composite system consisting of two subsystem a and
b which are separated from each other by a rigid, adiabatic and impermeable boundary. The extensive parameters of the subsystem are U a =
7.2M J, V a = 1m3 , N a = 1kmol, U b = 7.2M J, V b = 1m3 andN b = 2kmol.
The fundamental relation given below with R=8.314 kJ/kmol K is valid
for both the subsystems.
