We will kick off our Harcourt Reading Series with a HAT WEEK starting on Monday, September
21st! Send your camper to school with one of his/her favorite hats, as well be using it to
write about this week. (Well end our week with a Hat Parade throughout the school!!) Our
weekly story The Hat tells about a little girl who loses her hat on a windy day and how her
friend helps her get it back. This story features our weekly spelling and word wall words, as
well as the short vowel /a/ sound.
Next week, we will begin reading our first of many little take-home books. We call these
books Decodable Books because they are filled with spelling and word wall words your
child will be able to use to help improve his/her reading. These little decodable books will
come home weekly with your campers and will reinforce the weeks spelling focus, as well as
include the weeks word wall words. Have your children read them to you at home for
quick and smooth (fluency) practice. Store these books inside the shoebox library for
frequent re-reading at home! (Decorating ideas: wrapping paper, stickers...)
New spelling and word wall words for the week will always be listed above. Our first spelling
PRE TEST will be next Wednesday. For students who do not pass with 100%, another chance
will be provided on Friday. Tests on word wall words (also listed above) will always be on
Thursdays. Practice at home and keep these tests positive. I always call any test a Show
What You Know so we dont set up any test anxiety.
Looking forward to the week ahead,
