Tutorial 1: Material and Energy Balances

The objective of this tutorial is to introduce you to the use of process simulator software
HYSYS for setting up and solving material and energy balances of a process flow sheet
involving several unit operations.
You will learn how to build the component page, select the thermodynamics package, set up
the flow sheet, and retrieve the simulation results.
Please access the tutorial materials from Contents => Tutorials => Material & Energy
Balances => Ammonia/Water Separation
The process flow sheet for ammonia and water separation process is shown in Figure 1.

Tutorial questions:
1. Please verify that mass and energy of water and ammonia are conserved
2. Please answer the following questions:
What are the molar compositions at the dew point of the mixture at 250 psia? What is the dew
point temperature?
What are the molar compositions of the liquid and vapor phases at the condenser outlet?
What are the molar compositions of the liquid and vapor phases at the expansion valve outlet?
What are the molar compositions of the liquid and vapor phases at the separator outlet?
3. Based on your answers in #2, please outline how the above process separates water from
ammonia and elaborate on chemical engineering principles involved
