Many ‘experts' tell us that all types of singing have positive psychological effects. Apparently the act of singing releases endorphins, the brain's "feel good" chemicals and studies have shown that singing decreases both anxiety and depression. So even if you only sing in the shower — carry on - it's good for you! Groups of people are also re-discovering the positives of singing together, and choirs have become popular again. It has been said that choral singers tend to be happier than the rest of us! Maybe that's because there is an added social dimension which is also beneficial to our wellbeing. Those of us who attend church services tend to sing a great deal! So hopefully it follows that we are a ‘happy bunch of people." Every Sunday morning in church finds us singing our hearts out and | can personally testify that for me Sunday's are generally joyful and happy days! However there is more to singing in church than making us happy. God wants us to sing. It's not an option — it's acommand! Colossians 1:16 “let the word of Christ dwell in you— singing psalms and hymns and Spiritual songs to God.” Why isit so important to God? Does he simply desire our praise and adoration? No, it's more than that. When we sing we dig deep roots into the teachings of God, we build each other up, and importantly, when we sing we are strengthened spiritually. We often think of singing only when we're happy and times are good: Psalm 98.1 Oh sing to the Lord anew song, for he has done marvelous things. But what about when we are not feeling so good? Singing can actually strengthen us and help us to cope and to persevere in the face of hard times and difficulties Psalm 59.:16 | will sing of your might; | will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been a fortress for me and a refuge in the day of my distress. Singing is good for us, physically, mentally and spiritually. And to cap it all it makes us happy! So whether you are joyful or whether you struggle for joy - SING! Get those endorphins going! Even better, join us happy bunch of people’ on Sundays, so together we can sing God's glory and spiritual songs. With Love Revd. Many thanks to allwho participated in any way. Big thank you to L-O-N-G standing team of helpers. Beverley Boon ‘Thank you' to our Editorial Team. For the past eighteen months, Hayley Davies and Chrissy Shale have edited our magazine so that each month, we get to know what is going on. As volunteers, they have used their limited spare time to provide us all with an excellent service of high quality, always within deadline and we owe them a huge debt of gratitude. ‘Thank you and well done’ to both of you. The sad news is that Hayley is resigning from the team in order to go back to university to study for an M.Sc. We all wish her good fortune in her new adventure. We shall miss you. The good news is that, despite the fact that she and Tony are moving house and leaving the immediate area, Chrissy has offered to continue as editor. The PCC is delighted to accept this offer. ‘Thank you Chrissy’ 6 | Village Link www.ggmbenefice.uk These days everyone says “Check out the web site” and wheth we are ordering salmon from Sainsbury's or fixing a flight to France, that is where we look Our group of Churches, all ten of them, have now got a dedicated web site that shows all the different things that go on in all our Churches locally. There is a “Who's Who" and details of all the services, of course, and information if you are thinking of a Church wedding or baptism and if you need to plana funeral. And all the events too - from coffee mornings to Bingo and Harvest suppers - but there is also a great deal of detail about our villages & their histories. What you should really look at is the wonder of our Church buildings. They are all hundreds of years old and still have the most incredible medieval, and sometimes quite modern, touches. See if you can answer these questions: (Just for fun) Which Church has an underground tunnel leading to the Rectory? Which Church features a pair of wrestlers? Which Church helped educate the first Prime Minister of this country? Which Church maybe has a connection to the designer, William Morris? Which Church has “one of the great medieval treasures of Norfolk” ? Which Church has a mermaid (or merman)? Which Church has a font carved in India? Which Church has a squirrel sitting on a pew? Which Church has a “Green Man” ? ( actually 2 Churches do). Which Church has a chalice that goes back all the way to 1681? If space permits, we'll print the answers in the next issue. But please do have a quick look at the site. Every time someone logs on, we will go up the google lists ( or Bing or Yahoo etc.) and we all want to be first. Fingers crossed, the site will be “live” by the time you receive this magazine, which will also be on-line and in full colour. Village Link | 7 Holly Meadows is a Good School! It is official, Ofsted says that pupils of Holly Meadows School “enjoy going to school and are provided with a wide range of opportunities to help them develop into well-rounded young people who are well prepared for the next stage of their education”. The recent Ofsted inspection has judged the school as securely GOOD with leadership and management, behaviour and safety of pupils, quality of teaching, achievement of pupils and the Early Years provision all rated as good. | am delighted with the outcome of a great deal of hard work by the whole school team. It has been recognised that the quality of teaching is good. We have seen rapid improvement in the last year. Teachers know pupils well as a result of regular and accurate assessments. They have positive relationships with them, creating a calm atmosphere for learning. The teachers plan interesting lessons which the pupils enjoy and so they behave well and are engaged; teaching assistants also make a valuable contribution to pupils’ learning. We are so proud of our achievements. We have all had a great summer holiday, relaxing and knowing that we had been officially recognised as being “Good”. Parents and friends of the school have been very supportive on our journey and we are very grateful to each and every one of them. We are now prepared and ready for the new school year and are looking to build on the successes of the past year and work to achieve Outstanding. We are welcoming a number of new pupils and their parents this year; and we have a new Parent Governor Catherine Rushton who has been appointed; we hope they all are looking forward to the exciting year ahead. Wishing them all the best for this coming year and we are delighted they have chosen to join us. We also have an exciting event coming with Circus Ferrell troupe arriving and setting up on our schoo! field on Monday 18 October. The children will have the opportunity to take part in workshops in the Big Top and everyone in the area is welcome to come to performances in the evening, tickets will be on sale in the school office soon. This is a fantastic way to end a busy half term and we hope that some of our other local schools will come with their children for a visit. We hope to see you there! ROYDON CHURCH 'BIT OF A DO’ “Bring me sunshine...” (I'm sure Revd Jane also said 'please' because she's polite like that). Anyway, Roydon's second 'BIT OF A DO' was, again, blessed with lovely weather and deemed a great success with almost £1,400 being raised. For about thirty years | wished we could revive Roydon Fete but we had neither the people or the venue to get started again. Now, thanks to an enthusiastic rector, an energetic organiser, enormous support from the other parishes and the use of the (tidied and mown) glebe field, we hope it will continue to thrive. Thanks also to our own parishioners who worked so hard and those who turned up on the Polite Requests Horse Riders: Could we ask politely that horse riders, when their horses accidently leave horse muck on pavements, could it please be cleared up by the owner or alternatively if you are a gardener claim it and put it on your compost heap. Many thanks, Grimston PC. Litter Bin: Grimston PC is willing to place a new litter bin next to the Church Close Bus Shelter, but we need a volunteer to empty it, as with all our bins. As NHS funding cannot keep pace with the growth in demands and costs, they must ensure they get the most from the money available, by organising the resources they have, to best provide the health services that meet changing needs. The financial allocation for 2015-16 is £1400 per person per year. One inpatient admission can cost all of that and most care packages cost double that each month, so it is necessary to make sure that every £ is well spent. Nationally there are some major challenges facing the NHS. * Anageing population, with people living longer with a combination of health problems. * Changing patterns of health and illness requiring more expensive drugs and treatments. «Increasingly tight regulation about standards such as staffing numbers, quality and safety of care. * Not enough money to fund everything at the same rate in the future « The requirement to extend services to longer hours and 7 days a week. Locally West Norfolk services are particularly affected because:- « We have a high proportion of elderly people. * Our population is spread thinly across a wide, rural area with poor transport links. * The QEH is struggling with money. * We have a high proportion of people with chronic conditions such as diabetes, lung disease and obesity. * It's difficult to recruit health and social care staff in West Norfolk. The focus will be on integrating services and coordinating care. If nothing were to change, patients who could be treated at home would continue to be admitted to hospital. The CCG is planning some intermediate care beds to support patient discharge from hospital this winter and ensure community capacity for rehabilitation and return home. The campaign to 'Choose me not A&E' has shown in a reduction in minor attendances of 210 per month — a potential saving of £12000 The next Governors’ Council meeting will be on 6” October at 4pm in the conference room at QEH. In all, the afternoon raised over £565, which will go towards our donations to Remap and the Ezone Workshops, our charities for 2015: Trophy winners are as follows: Peter Holborrow Memorial Trophy (best vegetable exhibit) won by Marjorie Peach; Guy Corder Cup (best horticultural exhibit) and The Mike Alcock Cup (best in flowers), James Parker; The Fred Taylor Trophy (highest points in Vegetables) and the Arthur Meek Trophy (highest points in Horticultural) J. It is hoped that representatives of Remap and Ezone will also attend. The Lynn to Hunstanton Railway. Do you know which station on this line served the branch to Wells next the Sea? Or why there were so many sidings for goods wagons at Wolferton? Or what breakfast used to cost in the dining car of the daily commuter express from Hunstanton to King's Cross, London? If not, you may be interested in an illustrated talk by Richard Adderson, acclaimed author and railway historian, on the development of this local line which played such an important part in the life of North West Norfolk. The evening is in aid of Friends of St Botolph's and takes place in church on Thursday, October 8", starting at 7.30pm. Admission is £6 on the door (members £5) and includes Village Link | 21 Norfolk Ornithologists’ Association (NOA) The NOAis a Norfolk charity dedicated to the scientific study of birds, and has been running Holme Bird Observatory since 1962. This is the only accredited Bird Observatory in Norfolk. It focuses primarily on bird migration and population dynamics through bird ringing and daily census work, and the information collected acts as an indicator of environmental health locally, nationally and internationally. We welcome visitors and new members, so please come and see us at Holme Bird Observatory which is situated at the end of Broadwater Road next to Holme Dunes NWT reserve and adjacent to the Norfolk Coast Path between Holme-next-the-Sea and Thornham villages. The Observatory is staffed daily and bird ringing is carried out on a regular basis, weather permitting. If you wish to come and watch please do, although a phone call to the number below would be advisable, to check that ringing is going to take place. There are no refreshments or toilets at the Observatory, but facilities are available at Holme Dunes NWT visitor centre on a seasonal basis. The NOA also manages other local reserves where access is free to members and open to non-members for a small donation. These reserves not only attract birds but are also important for plants and invertebrates. Hempton Marsh is on the A1065 just outside Fakenham, and is manned by volunteers. Walsey Hills is on the A149 just east of Cley-next-the-Sea, and has a weekend summer warden and volunteer support midweek. Refreshments and toilets are available year-round at Cley NWT visitor centre, which is nearby. The NOA also keeps daily records of moths, which are trapped and released at Holme from March through to the autumn, and butterflies and dragonflies are also recorded daily. We hold annual "moth days" at Holme and Hempton when everyone is welcome to come and see the moths caught overnight, and to wonder at the beautiful colours and markings of these fascinating creatures. Although this year's moth days have already taken place, we plan similar events in future years. Admission to these events is free. We also attend Holme Open Gardens each summer where moths are shown and identified, and where the NOA Warden, Sophie Barker, is on hand to speak to visitors about the work of the NOA. Further details of locations and access can be obtained by telephoning Holme Bird Observatory (01485 525406) or by visiting our website, www.noa.org.uk, which is currently being revised to increase the information about the NOAand its activities. 22 | Village Link Rachael Spooner DOMESTIC PLUMBING SERVICES MCFHP MAFHP Repair or replacement of Leaking Taps, root nealth : roressionai Ball valves, pipes etc. ee OMCe Ok Washing machine, dishwasher and AN APPOINTMENT 01485 601128 bathroom installation. Seeing the students standing in the rain at the Clock bus stop with no shelter, | understand that they not only have to sit in the bus in their wet clothes, but all day in the classrooms as well. There are many other local folk using the bus stop who also get very wet and uncomfortable after waiting in the rain | brought this matter to the Parish Council members who were very sympathetic but at the time finance was too short to provide a shelter. However, some time later the PCC was able to purchase a new shelter with the help of a very generous grant from Norfolk County Council - great news! Whata pleasant surprise when a team came and proceeded to dig up the ground! Then along came the shelter which was lifted up and carefully positioned. Soon the cement arrived and was carefully laid, setting so quickly that in no time at all the shelter was ready to be used. We must once again thank the Parish Council members for all their help in getting the new shelter - and hope that all of us who wait for the bus (and all who pass by) will keep an eye on it to make sure itis well cared for. 4 mx Sa TiddlyPotts Playgroup TiddlyPotts Playgroup opened it's doors again for the Autumn Term on Friday 4th September. People remembered how another picture of a naked fleeing Vietnamese girl from the napalm bombing brought about the US forces withdrawal from an indecisive war. Such a small thing set against an enormous tragedy turning around a nation is surely something to ponder. For many people of faith there is an understanding of the hand of a merciful and compassionate God. There is a sovereignty to waken the dead and give life. We have just celebrated 75 years from the Battle of Britain which owed victory to so few on behalf of so many. Also at that time of great crisis for our nation, gratitude for many in crowded churches up and down our land on their knees before Almighty God on behalf of those few. It is not surprising that the member nations of the European Union are struggling to find unity, and common mind over what to do to solve the refugee crisis, recognising the dangers of welcoming as many as wish to come. The drama has thrown up some surprises, both good and bad. The generous response of Germany, possibly mindful of the huge demands of reunification following the collapse of the Berlin Wall. Such a contrast to Hungary, whose Prime Minister displayed a heartless act of Nimbyism, having forgotten our country's welcome to many Hungarians to meet our labour shortage who worked in the coal mines a generation ago We too cannot escape a judgment over the government's response to the crisis, but the fact is we have offered no relief to our fellow nations in the European Union in allocating safe homes to some of the thousands flooding into their countries. We might do well to reflect on Pope Francis' call for mercy. For grace triumphs over law, and to those who show no mercy, no mercy will be Bulb Planting: Further reminder about our village event on Saturday 17th October, 10 am Start.
