At the session consultants will quiz you on the cases with no notes allowed! I'm always terrified when they ask me a question as | tend to be totally clueless, but this is one of the only opportunities you have to ask questions to doctors who really know their stuff so don't be shy! After a sweaty 2 hours of CBL, you're done for the day “thank god*. Monday nights in Liverpool mean one thing only... THE RAZ. If you chose to you can start your night at Faculty for a cheeky quadvod or The Brink if alcohol isn’t your thing (it’s Liverpool's tee-total bar), before hitting one of the weirdest clubs known to man. The Ra? is basicaly «dingy cellar full of people looking for a good time, and for some reason always appears to be full of medics. Those that brave the drinks menu can choose between drinking o Raz bomb or the infamous Raz fat frog. You'll no doubt wake up at some point in that hideous Raz t-shirt you brought which seemed like such a good idea ot the time... Well Tuesday morning lectures can be dificult for those who had one fat frog too many, and the people who've had a full night's sleep are the envy of the Raz-dwellers by the end of ‘two hours of immunology; just hope you don’t have HARC every Tuesday morning! if you didn't know already, this is where you lear all about anatomy using real life pro-sections, so a HARC timetable coinciding with the post-Raz blues i just not what anyone needs! This is the best part of first year, and the point when you start to {feel ike a real med student. itis here where you will learn all the skills you need on the wards, from taking blood to rectal examinations! Honestly, what's not to love? Everyone knows that medics have the best socials, which is why on a Thursday night you'll probably find yourself at one of the LMSS events, such as the Ordinary Meetings. These are an opportunity for you to ‘meet medics from different years, find out some embarrassing and funny stories from the med school, be entertained by all kinds of speakers and then goon a huge night out around the city. $0 the weekend is almost here and it’s Friday afternoon; you can almost taste the freedom, but before you can throw the textbooks to one side you have to navigate yourself through a two hour stint of Population Perspective. It might just be the excitement {for the weekend making it difficult to concentrate that ‘makes this fee! like two of the longest hours of your life, but if you manage to keep your focus you really are in fora treat. 50 the weekend is here and well, for two days Liverpool is your oyster! Whether you have played | all of your life, or fancy picking up something new, our sports clubs offer a wide range of opportunities to get you involved as well as trying to combat the inevitable beer belly that first year will cause. Over the last few years Liverpool medics sports has gone from strength to strength, with most teams competing university and local leagues as well as the annual National Association of Medical Schools (NAMS) ‘competitions. Last year the Men’s football team won NAMS, the Netballers came fourth, Men’s rugby got through to the semi-finals and Women’s rugby were promoted into national challenge league 1. Hopefully over the next few years we can continue this upward trend and welcome you into this great communi | sports! My name is Tom, I'm your ASS rep (Associated Societies) for the coming year, and it's my job to try and organise and llaise with all of the vast array of societies that are associated with the LMSS, There truly is something for everyone! The societies which are associated with the LMSS cover an enormous range of social and ‘extracurricular activities. They offer anything from top class teaching on topics that might be on your radar, to opportunities to perform and showcase your talents, toa whole host of sports teams, all of ‘whom are funded in part by the LMSS. Anyone interested in a career in O&G should definitely get involved. PsychSoc - If you're interested in psychiatry then these are the people total to! Even if you aren't interested in psychiatry and really really want to be an orthopaedic surgeon, well funnily enough schizophrenic people can break their arm too, so you need to. know about psycht Regular lectures, with careers advice from people taining in the region, and also a revision day nearer the dreaded exams. RadSoc - Excellent teaching throughout the year on the often tricky subject of radiology - ever wanted to know what that patchy thingy was on that x-ray? You know just there - next to the.. err heart? Speak to these guys. Also offer a massive bank of reference material and images with descriptions for student exam prep if you join the society! Hugh Owens Thomas Orthopaedic Society - All budding Orthopods well this is the society for you! These guys pitch their lectures at all levels, offering teaching ranging from basic anatomy and physiology right up to OSCE and LOCAS practice for ‘your practical exams. Great if you want to speak to people currently training in orthopaedics and see what the job is really like! LivNeuro & NeuroSoc - Great new societies covering all the necessary info for neurology. Walton Neurocentre based in Aintree hhospital is one of the North's best specialist neurology sites. Keep an eye out for these guys if you're interested in neurology, and if you're getting your multiple sclerosis and myasthenia gravis all muddled up speak to the people in the know! GPSoc - For al of those budding GPs out there then these are the people for you — throughout the year they will have information for you on how to best go about getting ahead in this career. If you're Medsin - This isa national student led organisation whose aim is to promote health as well as educate students on health inequalities in local and global communities. Medical Research Society ~ Anyone interested in academic medicine should speak to these guys, if you are looking for help on getting into this interesting field you will find it here International Medical Exams Writing Society - This one is fairly self explanatory! Anyone who thinks they might go into ‘medical assessment as a career (maybe you wont feel lke it straight after your first exams!) should definitely get in touch. Firstly congratulations on making it into medical school and a big welcome to Artefacts! We are your creative outlet for your time here at medical school, everything from choir, dance, a full musical production and plenty of opportunity to choreograph and perform your own pieces at the artefacts variety show! In the first part of the year we have choir and dance groups with performances at various events throughout the year (Charity auction, president's initiation etc) and our highly anticipated Christmas concert! The choir sing a variety of pieces from the tradition carols to spectacular versions of songs we all know and love (think vida la viva, chasing cars, Disney) The biggest artefacts event of the year is our wonderful musical production which takes places just before Easter. Anyone new to dance is more than welcome and there’s opportunities for more seasoned performers in the advanced dance group.
