SPLIT EMERGES ON SUPER TRAWLERS

A split has emerged in the Liberal Party over the Federal Governments support for
super trawlers.
Liberal MP Bob Baldwin, who was dumped from his position as Parliamentary
Secretary to the Minister for the Environment, has called on National Minister
Barnaby Joyce to ban super trawlers.
Tasmanian Labor Senator Carol Brown has welcomed Mr Baldwins interest in this
important issue.
Mr Baldwin tweeted: With a change of PM, @Barnaby_Joyce its time to listen to our
constituents and ban the Super Trawler, you now have total responsibility.
I am pleased that Mr Baldwin has seen fit to break his silence, Senator Brown said.
As the former Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for the Environment, I hope
the Minister for Agriculture will see fit to seriously consider the impact of super
trawlers on our marine environment and local fishing activities.
It is refreshing to finally see a member of the Liberal Party speaking out, unlike his
colleague Senator Richard Colbeck who refused to support a Senate inquiry into the
impact of super trawlers and has ignored the concerns of Tasmanians.
I hope more of Mr Baldwins colleagues break ranks and say what they really
believe about super trawlers.
