Pinas ara coated by the extrusion of plastics slooving or shoating, or by the {uslon of polyathylone powder. A coating thickness of {mm is edequate for corrosion protection. A greater thick Increases the reslstanoa to mechanical stresses, ‘The specications given here account for both higher tives which become britlo at low tomporaturos are. no longer used in practice because they do not meet the ro- quirements for adequate bond strength at 60°C. Both fused and extruded coatings are required to have the seine vaive of percentage elongation at failure, which justi fics their boing coverod together here. ‘Tho heat ageing test at 100°C is intended to gNe an indica tion of the minimum resistance of the coating to thermal stresses in storage and in service. Testing Is accelerated and represents savere conditions, Ginee type € coatings are texpacted to conform to higher demands in service, the heat ‘ageing test shel be carried out for twice as long as for the normal type, ‘Testing for resistance to light agelng Is also accelerated, and shall be carried out in accordance with DIN 62 207, This Is Intended to prevent differences In test equipment from influencing tost results. Wetting tho tost plocos is intended 10 prevent the formation of deposits on the test plece sur~ face, which might faleify test results Experience gathering in transporting, laying and sercing pipes with polyethylene coating has shown that a high bond Strength is necessary to avold mechanical damage to the pipes. Based on experience and extensive researon, it hes also been shown that bond strength may decline over tims, regardless of the ambient conditions, and that coating may ‘lsbond entirly if damaged. However, this involves neither ‘an Increased isk of cortosion (e.g. underrusting) nor an increase in the protective current density requirement in ‘cathoaie corrosion protection Bond strength is not a significant factor with regard to the protection tne coating provides against corrosion, as tong ‘asthe thickness and quality ofthe coating meet the require- ments specified hore. Howovor, it s dosirablo that the coat- ing adhore well over large areas to avoid mechanical dam: ‘age during pipelaying. Therefore, except for the determina- tion of coating roolathity, no other oleotrcohomioal texto are Included here. Determination of resistance to bilstering Is. irrelevant ‘because such does not occur In the coating materials DIN*ENGLISH 30670 9) MM 2794446 OO2770b 637 a ‘covered hore. Similarly, determination of cathodic disbond: ing Is not included, since this test does not provide relevant Information vntn regard to the quality of polyethylene coat: Ings and their long-term corrosion protection. Should date Inination of cathodic disbanding he raquirad, American Standard ASTM G 6-90 specifies that the method described In DIN 80671 be usec.
