The latest draft designs, a fundraising plan, results of the Need

and Demand Study, a social and
election of board members highlight the September 23 annual
meeting of the Slocan Valley
Seniors Housing Society.
With the communitys support and a dedicated board, weve
come a long way in this last year,
said society president Rita Moir.
Passmore Lodge is on a good
even keel, and weve progressed
steadily with plans for the Slocan
affordable housing project.
All 12 board members elected
last year are willing, ready and
able to stay on, providing stability
and continuity as the board enters
major fundraising for Slocan and
continues with improvements at
Passmore. Board members continuing their terms or up for their
second term are Lydia Kania,
Ruth Hackett, Penny Tees, Paul
Wilkinson, Don Currie, Mabel
Kabatoff, Eric Clough, Lynnda
Moore, Wilf Rimmer, Willie
Harasemow, Sally Mackenzie and
Rita Moir.
In the past year, the society raised
funds for a Slocan Valley housing
survey and study, with support
from the Columbia Basin Trust,
Area H, Heritage Credit Union
and Slocan Legion. Study co-ordinator Ann Harvey and research
assistant Nora Lilligren published
the study in early August.

Slocan Valley seniors responded. The study reveals a large
need and demand for seniors housing in the Slocan Valley, and inspires the next stage in the process: fundraising.
The society needs to raise about $300,000 in funds and
materials before applying for a mortgage, and with help
from the Slocan Valley Community Legacy Society has
hired Hillary Elliott to help the board research sources of
support. Fundraising efforts are beginning and have been

buoyed by an unexpected and generous donation of construction and finish lumber.
The Wednesday, September 23 AGM at Passmore Lodge
at 3650 Old Passmore Road begins with a 6 pm social with
refreshments, membership renewals, and a chance to review
revised plans. (A meeting is also being planned later in the
fall for more public input). The AGM begins at 7 pm.

Nakusp Recycling Depot Relocates
The Nakusp Recycling Depot will be relocated from

beside the Nakusp Recreation Centre to the Nakusp
Landfill on October 19. The Village of Nakusp requested
the relocation because the current depot is located near
a water supply and the Village had concerns regarding
possible water contamination. The Village of Nakusp has
curbside collection service for recyclables. Residents outside of Village boundaries who do not receive curbside
service will be able to deposit their recyclables at the same
time and location that they dispose of their garbage. The
recycling depot will be open during the operating hours
of the landfill; Nakusp Landfill 1420 Hot Springs Rd:

Sky
Sky is a three-year-old male German shepherd/husky cross with one

brown and one blue eye. He was surrendered to the BC SPCA Nelson
Branch due to issues with livestock on the property.
Sky is a lovable boy who loves going for walks and is great on lead. He
is very playful, especially with toys, and loves to be around people. Sky
is an active, strong, friendly guy with a lot of love to give! He absolutely
adores his foster family (and they adore him!) and will likely bond quickly
with a new guardian.
Sky would do best as the only pet in a household, ideally with a fenced
yard. He has shown some aggression with dogs and likes to chase other
animals such as cats, rabbits and chickens. While Sky will need extra
training to work on this behavioural issue, he is otherwise well behaved,
responsive to commands and keen to learn from his guardians.

This September The Whole School welcomes two new

full time teachers Roxanne Mackay, a teacher with training in permaculture, natural building and visual arts; and
Eli Geddis, experienced in teaching outdoor and artistic programs, including drama, writing and wilderness
survival. These two new teachers join Anniah Lang, The
Whole School Principal; Rose Hodwitz, also a certified
teacher and Educational Assistant; and Jose Corrigan,
the school Coordinator. As a result, The Whole School
offers a full time Kindergarten program.

Operation Christmas Child
This hands-on project gives individuals and groups an

opportunity to give gifts and hope to children in desperate
situations around the world. Fill a shoebox with school
supplies such as pencils, erasers, small notebooks, sharpeners and hygiene items like washcloths, a toothbrush, a
plastic cup and soap as well as new toys..... a ball or balloons - whatever will fit in your shoebox!
Samaritans Purse asks permission in the communities
where these gifts are distributed to give Christian material
to any child who wants to receive it. The boxes are given
to every child regardless of whether they have taken the
Christian material.
Its helpful if you can also include a gift of $7 to help with
shipping the shoeboxes, but it is not necessary to give a
donation in order to give a shoebox!

Raising Money Smart Kids Series
A series of presentations and discussions for parents

will be launched this fall. On Thursday, October 1 at the
Winlaw StrongStart Centre, Barb Szuta, Kaslos CBAL
coordinator and financial literacy facilitator, will lead this
engaging discussion about allowance and the spend, save,
share philosophy. This fun session has something for parents of children of any age, even toddlers!
This is the first of a three-part series that will cover topics of high interest for every family with a young child or
baby. A special guest and topic will be featured on the first

A Great Success
The Slocan Valley Fall Fair held at Winlaw Hall was a

resounding success in its 16th year, with more than 85
exhibitors and 40 vendors. Competition and fun escalates
each year.
This year entrants displayed 600 entries their best
flowers arrangements, potatoes, baking, pumpkins, all
manner of weird and wonderful fruits and vegetables,
and beautiful crafts. Tables were full to overflowing, with
tomatoes (over 65 entries alone) potatoes and onions
(largest one weighing in at 1352grams) spurring some of
the most spirited rivalries.
A noticeable change this year was the number of kids
entries, with one side of the hall full of decorated veggies, collections of everything from bottle caps to vintage
miniature motorcycles and special rocks. Lego creations
with a wonderful one depicting the fall fair itself and
decorated cakes featured strongly in the childrens area.
Kids were also entertained carving zucchinis, excelling in
the pie eating contest, and admiring the huge pumpkins.
The weather was perfect, not too hot, not too cold and no
rain, and made a perfect time for visiting, eating, listening to
wonderful music, and supporting local vendors, who offered
everything from wood fired pizza to pies and potatoes.
Grand Aggregate winners this year are: top female Carolyn Haddow, top male Patrick Squires, under five years
Charlie Potter, five to eight years Gwendolyn Pusey, and
nine to 12 years Jasmine Pusey.
Pumpkin winners were: 1st place Colton Stooshnoff at
161 lbs, 2nd place Bernie Kosiancic at 123.5 lbs, 3rd place
Axile Stooshnoff at 120 lbs and finally the smallest at 33
lbs belonging to Sunny Nemmes.
