To Whom It May Concern
RE: Leigh Fryling
Leigh Fryling completed an international practicum placement in cooperation with SIs Canada and
Vancouver Island University during the month of May 2015. SIS Canada is a certified British Columbia
Offshore school, operating in the City of Sokcho in the eastern part of South Korea. The school follows
the British Columbia curriculum, taught in English by BC certified teachers. The school undergoes
rigorous inspections from the B.C. Ministry of Education on a yearly basis.
Leigh completed her practicum with grade seven, grade eight and grade nine students. The majority of
her teaching time was with a class of 10 grade 9 English Language Learners in the areas of Language arts
and Social Studies. | offer this letter of reference as a result of formal and informal classroom,
observations.
Leigh is an enthusiastic, confident young teacher. She quickly developed a good rapport with the students
and the students were engaged in their studies. She became fully involved with the daily routines of the
classes and the school on the first day of her time at the school. Leigh showed a sincere desire to get
involved with the activities in an around the school as well as learning about South Korea and Sokcho.
In the classes observed, Leigh demonstrated her abilities to scaffold and ‘chunk’ a lesson for English
language learners. She anticipated where there would be problems in understanding and then paced her
teaching and varied her approach to ensure student comprehension of expectations. Leigh promoted
student engagement through questioning techniques, positive reinforcement and her own personal
eagerness about the subject material.
| feel that Leigh has the skills and aptitude to be a very good teacher and will be an asset to her future
schools.
