The American Lover by Rose Tremain Chatto & Windus 2014

Rose Tremain displays in this collection of short stories the same qualities that make her
novels such a pleasure to read. The stories encompass a wide variety of characters, locations
and time periods. There is a gem is about the stationmaster at the railway station where
Tolstoy met his end, a wicked imagining of a housekeeper who inspired Daphne du Mauriers
Mrs Danvers, and a modern day English Juliets romance with a Moldavian, and illegal,
immigrant Romeo. The stories are all written with style and wit, by a writer in command of
her craft.
