Lord Venkatesvara &

Tirupati Notes
In Varaha Purana is described:
Sveta-Varaha manifest during the night of
Brahma, the pralayakalpa, when the earth melted and sank
to patalaloka. Visnu had been lying on a banyan leaf
floating on the water in Maharloka as Vatapatra-sayi when
He thought of re-creating by rescuing the earth. He fought
with Hiranyaksa, slit his body in two with His tusks, the
blood of the demon causing the water to turn red. Brought
up earth on His tusk, stood up in the Janaloka like a
stupendous mountain, placing one foot on Adisesa.
Then on request of Brahma and devas he fixed the
earth as before, divided the sapta-sagaras (seven oceans)
and sapta-lokas (seven worlds) as formerly. He next bade
Brahma to create the Jagat (world) as before.
Wanting to reside on earth for some time and
protect the inhabitants, He ordered Garuda to fetch the
Kridacala (sacred hill) from Vaikuntha. Then He selected a
spot for the hill.
300 miles long by 30 miles wide, the hill is shaped
like Sesa.
Brahma etc. prayed to Him to please become
peaceful and composed, and to rest on this hill and grant
boons to all people unable to reach Him by dhyana-yoga or
karma-yoga.
Since then He resides invisibly on the hill,
amusing Himself with Laksmi beside rever beds, on torrent
ridges and in the valleys of the Hill. Sometimes He appears
to saintly persons. He will remain here to the end of SvetaVaraha-Kalpa (the present kalpa) The Hill is also known as
Sri Varaha Ksetra. "I like this Venkatadri more than
Vaikuntha; here shall I rest with Sri and Bhumi, and be
resolved to grant the prayers of men."
The hill will appear in Kali-yuga to be an ordinary
rocky hill; at other times it manifests as a golden mountain,
as a personification of knowledge and wisdom, as a heap of
gems, or as be-jewelled Srinivasa Himself.
