Additional Bible Study Questions
Note: A small number of discussion questions have been provided each week (see page 19).
These addtional Bible study questions (page 20) are optional, and intended as supplemental
questions for group or individual study. They carry an emphasis on life application.

5. Outline: The prayer in chapter 9 is a spiritual summary of the OT history of the Jewish
people: the Creation (v. 6); the call of Abraham (vv. 7–8); the Exodus (vv. 9–14); the nation’s
wilderness experiences (vv. 15–23); the conquering of the land (vv. 24–25); the period of
Judges (vv. 26–29); the period of prophets up to the captivity (vv. 30–31). “Now
therefore...” (v. 32) brings us up to Ezra’s day and the need of the nation to repent and
confess sin. They recognized that the deliverance prophecies (v. 36) of Isaiah and Jeremiah
did not apply to their return from captivity — those would be future.
➤ Which part of their prayer hits your heart the most?

6. The people renew the covenant God had made with their ancestors (9:38), and the covenant
renewal ceremony continues into chapter ten. In summary, essentially all of God's people
agreed to sign a covenant binding them to certain obligations. 1) We will obey Scripture
(10:29), 2) we will lead our families (10:30), 3) we will worship our God (10:31), and 4) we
will give generously (10:32-39). ➤ Of those four — hear & obey, lead, worship, and give —
which one is most difficult for you to submit to God?

7. If you were to write a covenant to God, what issues would He want you to personally
address?

8. What makes it possible to keep such an covenant? (John 14:21)

9. What does your current obedience to God’s Word say about your love for Jesus?
