Chapter 3 Methodology

Thesurveyapproachusingquestionnaireswasusedfor
quantitativedatacollectioninthisstudy.Ary,Jacobs,Razavieh
andSorensen(2006)claimthatsurveysareawidelyusednon
experimentalresearchformineducation.Forthisstudy,thesemi
structuredopenendedinterviewwouldbeusedtoo.Interviewsare
widelyusedforresearchpurposes.Itwouldbeadvantageoustouse
theminthisstudyasthestudyseekstogatherdataonopinions,
beliefsandfeelingsofthesubjectsaboutthesituationintheirown
words(Ary,Jacobs,Razavieh&Sorensen2006).
Participantsofthestudy
Atotalof60UniversityOfPutraTESLstudentsinFacultyof
Educationparticipatedinthestudy.Fromthese60participants,5
firstyearstudentswereusedfortheinterviews.Thecriteriafor
selectionofparticipantsforthisstudywerebasedthosewhohave
notparticipatedinToastmasterbefore.Thissamplingwouldgivea
goodpictureforsortofskillstheyhavebeforeparticipatingin
toastmasterandtheirexpectations.
Conveniencesamplingwaschosenasthesamplingtechnique.This
nonprobabilitysamplingtechniquewasconsideredadequatefor
thisstudy,asthiswasasmallscalestudyoveralimitedperiodof
time.Participantswereselectedbecauseoftheirconvenient
accessibilityandproximitytotheresearcher.Furthermore,
participantsselectedwerethoseexposedandalsonewparticipants
whohavenotparticipatedintoastmastertocomparethebeforeand
aftereffectivenessoftoastmaster.

Thisstudyusedadirectlyadministeredquestionnaireasthemain
instrumentfordatacollection.Thisdatagatheringtechniquein
surveyresearchhastheadvantageofahighresponserateandlow
cost,makingitsuitablefortheresearchertoanalyzeteachers
readinghabitsandteachingstrategiesforreadingskills.
