Measuring Pressure in a Closed Container: The traditional
laboratory instrument for measuring the pressure of a confined gas
is the manometer, pictured in Figure 5.3ab. Here the height of a column of mercury in a tube measures the difference in pressure between the container (a part of the manometer) and the atmosphere.
