PBI Diagram of Lesson Flow: 7th and 8th grade Earth Science Minerals

Day 1

Day 2

Engagement/Launch 15 min.

Explanation 20 min.

As an introduction to the minerals

lesson, I want to have students to
discuss their prior knowledge. We will
discuss what minerals are, how we
interact with them on a daily basis
(minerals as resources), how geologists
discovered them and discuss some
nature of science -- specifically
observations which they will use for this
lesson
*class discussion*

Groups will once again receive the

minerals. They will receive a white poster
paper in which their group will write the
physical properties they all determined
would help them identify minerals. I will
choose two groups to present their
posters (based on how elaborate they are,
ideally one that is not so elaborate and
one that it). This activity is similar to
Round Robin. I will then explain concepts
to the students with the help of a
powerpoint presentation.

Exploration 20 min.

Elaboration 5-10 min.

Students will be working in groups of 34. They will receive 8 minerals and a
rock. The minerals will be specifically
picked by me, showing a variety of
physical properties. Students will
receive their task statement. They will
write down their observations of the
minerals. They will then determine
methods geologists can use to identify
minerals.
