Professional Career Interview

I was able to interview Rocky Derrick, who is the Co-Founder/Co-Owner of Taylor
Derrick Capital. I met Rocky at a Barnes and Nobles in Bountiful. As I was looking for a book
with one of my old managers at the credit union I work at, I was telling her how I have decided
to get into mortgage lending for my career. After leaving the bookstore, Rocky drove up to us
and told me how he overheard me wanting to get into mortgages. He told me that he Co-owns a
Commercial Lending company and that he is an adjunct professor at the University of Utah, and
that if I was interested he would love to give me some advice about it. He gave me his number
and I set up an appointment with him in a few weeks. The weeks coming up to the meeting he
got really busy and we had to cancel the meeting, which because of his busy schedule we had to
reschedule 3 times. We eventually met up and had a great meeting with each other. I learned a lot
from his business and how I could progress to that point. He is now what I consider a mentor and
I talk with him on a consistent basis.
What I did to prepare for the interview was simply have a few questions prepared that I
wanted to know about that would help me along my path to the same field. Questions included:
1.

How did you get to the point of starting your own company?

2.

How much experience with lending have you had?

3.

What educational path or degree program did you take?

4.

What type of degree program what you recommend me going into?

The interview took place September 16, 2014 at 1:00 during lunch at his office in Salt
Lake City. I was coming from work so I dressed professionally with a suit. The initial interview
was a bit scary and awkward just because Ive never met him and didnt really know how to do it
well. As I came into the office he told me that he would rather have a lunch interview which
threw me off a little bit. After getting our lunch from the downstairs caf we went into the board
room and began the interview.
If I could do this over again I would have a little more confidence in the interview and
take more control of it. I feel like as the interviewer I didnt have much control at all and did not
run the interview as I should have. Of course I asked questions and performed the interview but I
felt like he ran the interview and the pace and controlled everything, which is not how I thought
it would go.

Dear Mr. Derrick:

I have been working with Deseret First Credit Union for the past year and a half handling loan
processing and underwriting. With this experience I know I qualify and am ready to take on
more responsibility that will come with working with you.
I will bring many varieties of experience to the field anywhere from loan processing and
underwriting with deadlines to making my work clear, organized and precise and convenient for
the clients I will be working with.
Working in a financial industry has helped me learn how the finance world works and how best I
can serve and help those I work with. I bring with me a great desire to accomplish work in an
orderly fashion and do it right the first time. I also bring happiness to the workplace towards my
co workers which would in the short term help everyone enjoy their work.
I am excited to meet in person to talk about how I could best be an asset to your company.
Thank you for your time and I look forward to us getting together by the end of the week.
Sincerely,
Wayne Smith

Commercial Lending Underwriter

Goal orientated, happy enthusiastic team player, willing to listen apply advice,
reliable, flexible, pro change and improvement, meets deadlines, handles stress, very
clean and organized, loyal and trustworthy, willing to stay long term, always wanting
to learn and progress, has the interests of the company always in my mind.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. I helped out the consumer lending department where I helped meet their quota of 80 underwritten
loans by the end of the day. On top of that goal I also was able to process and fund 10 indirect
loans which makes me organized and able to multi-task. This also gives me very relevant
experience with underwriting.
2. I organize training particularly towards how to process and set up mortgages. Knowing this will
make it easier to adjust to this new job because I will already know how commercial lending
works with the mortgage side of things.

WORK EXPERIENCE
Deseret First Credit Union Salt Lake City , Utah
July 2013 - Present
Area Training Specialist
1. My primary responsibility is to train and assist front line staff in their development on learning processing
and underwriting loans, as well as account opening/maintenance on new and existing members of the
credit union. I also train our staff how to navigate our system, tellering responsibilities, and
understanding state and federal regulations for financial institutions.
2. I will also travel to any branch that needs me to help cover, and I will have projects that I work on to
increase our capability and efficiency of the training department. One project I have worked on is
getting a service put in place and initiated. This service is called instant issue, which is what allows us
to hand out debit cards on the spot whenever the member wants one.
3. The credit union has just recently implemented the Member service representative program (MSR), which
allows all front line staff to help members with loans, accounts, and IRA's. I have accomplished the
MSR 2 certification which allows me to handle every product and service we have available. I have
also been promoted recently to the training program from being a MSR 2. Within a year I went from
working front line staff to training them.
