Grade 2- Word Problems with Money

This is the full-screen view

of the entire Prezi
Presentation that is used as a
model for instruction to
teach grade 2 word problems
with money.
The learning objective is:
Students can become
familiar with how much
each type of coin and dollar
bill are they worth, and learn
how to use strategies such as
addition to solve a word
problem.
Lets begin the lesson!

This slide helps reintroduce

what money looks like by
providing visuals of coins
and dollars.
Also, this slide is a great
moment to remind them that
they are looking at money.
Connect money by
discussing how money is
used in their daily life.
During the discussion write
what they say on the board.

Here is a visual of each coin

used in the United States.
Students should have white
boards or a piece of paper.
Ask students to quietly
write down how much each
of these coins are worth
individually.
Next, go over each coin.
Ex. This is a quarter, it is
worth 25 cents.
Phrases in a word problem
are something students need
to be aware of.
This will help them
recognize important phrases
that are used often in a word
problem.
Ex. More= Addition +
Less= Subtraction -

An interactive resource can help

guide a lesson. Here is a YouTube
video that at each pit stop in the car
race, the student should learn how
to solve the answer properly to
complete the race.

This video provides

strategies on ways to begin
solving the problem to get
the answer.

After learning strategies on

ways to solve a word
problem from the video,
share the word problem that
the classroom will work on
together as a whole class
using their white boards.
The word problem is: Sue
works and receives $10.33
an hour. If Sue works 8
hours in the day how much
more money will she receive
after her day at work?

Emphasize the expectations

of grade 2 math skills that
will help the students solve
this problem, and why we
are solving it.
Ask students if they have
any questions so far.
Explain that they can use
addition in this problem to
find out how much money
per hour is being added on to
Sues paycheck.
Also explain, the reason we
are adding the amount of
money per hour that Sue
makes; is to see how much
total money she made all
day.

Solving the problem:

Add the $10 Sue made with
students eight times, equals
$80.
Next, explain to add the
ones value of change which
equals 24. Students should
know that the 4 goes down
by the ones place, and the 2
gets carried over. Continue
adding in the tens value to
find out that the total would
become $2.64 in change that
Sue made all day.

***Correction in video
it states 5+3=11 NO
8+3=11

Pause for a moment in the

lesson to recollect thoughts
for yourself and the students.
Allow students to consider
what is next. Now that we
know Sue made a total
worth of $80, and her coins
added up to a total of $2.64.
What is next step to solve
the total amount of money
she made today?
Keyword: ADD

This is the last step where as

a class, students and teacher
can find the total amount of
money Sue has made today.
Align the money values in
the proper place value. Next,
add each number in its place
value to find out that Sue
made $82.64.
Ask students if they have
any questions.
Next, give them a
worksheet to do
individually to be corrected
by the teacher to see if the
learning objective was met.
