Much of the work we do in the biotech lab will involve guided research. Science research is a process, that has a general flow from beginning to end, that allows the scientist to ask and answer questions. We have already done an experiment that involved this process, our cheese lab. We focused in on the conclusion during that lab, and our first common task will allow you to showcase your ability to write a good conclusion. To practice for our common task, we will take a look at the experiment outlined for us in chapter 1.4. The Effects of bleach on Jeans
A researcher wanted to know if a
faded look could be created on denim with bleach. They thought that using 50% bleach solution would cause the desired lightening of the jeans
To test this hypothesis, the researcher first created solutions of decreasing bleach by diluting it with water.
After making the solutions,
the researcher cut out 15 squares of denim each 10cm x 10cm. They placed 3 squares in Petri dishes containing 20mL of each solution for 1 minute. After dipping the squares in the solutions, they were placed on lab matting for 9 minutes. They were then dipped in distilled water for 2 minutes to stop the bleaching process. This process was done 3 times total. Upon completion of the bleaching process, the squares were ranked for the amount of color removal and fabric damage on a scale of 0-10.
