Ricordo il giorno in cui un carissimo amico pianista mi fece ascoltare Ballads
di Coltrane e poco dopo parlando di musica mi disse 'Conosci la Badu?' e io
gli risposi 'No'.
Fu amore a primo ascolto.

It is an understatement to say Phil Woods was one of the greatest jazz altosaxophone players to ever set foot on this planet. One of the first times we
collaborated was when I recruited him for Dizzy Gillespies first State
Department Tour, which I was musical director for in 1956, and our
brotherhood was cemented during my Free & Easy tour of Europe in 1959,
when the band was stranded for 10 months. There was a very specific reason
Phil played on nearly every album Ive made since 1956, because he not only
was the best jazz alto sax players there was, he was a truly beautiful person
and epitomized what Nadia Boulanger meant about your music never being
more or less than you are as a human being. Phil and his family were my
family, and I will miss him like the brother he was to me. He will be eternally in
my soul.
