We are going to draw a box-and-whisker plot for the following data set:

Mean

The mean is the mathematical average of the distribution of

scores.
The way to calculate the mean score is simply to add up the
scores in the distribution and divide by the number of units.

155 + 190 + 145 + 195 + 160 + 200 + 165 + 185 + 150 + 165 + 160
+ 210 + 170 + 175 + 155 + 165 + 155 + 155 + 160 + 145 + 165 +
165 + 172 + 160 + 195 + 168 + 170 = 4555
4755 / 27 = 168.7

Median

The median is the middle score in a distribution. It is the point at

which half the scores fall above and half the scores fall below.
The way to calculate the median is to rank order the data from
least to greatest.
Then cross off the low scores, then the high scores. Repeat this
step until there is only one number left.

145, 145, 150, 155, 155, 155, 155, 160, 160, 160, 160, 165, 165, 165,
165, 165, 168, 170, 170, 172, 175, 185, 190, 195, 195, 200, 210

The median is 165.

First Quartile/Third Quartile

The First Quartile or lower quartile and the Third Quartile or

upper quartile can be found by finding the medians of the two
halves.
The first half is:

145, 145, 150, 155, 155, 155, 155, 160, 160, 160, 160, 165, 165

Cross off the low scores, then the high scores until there is only
one number left. That number will be the First Quartile.
The First Quartile is 155.
The second half is:

165, 165, 168, 170, 170, 172, 175, 185, 190, 195, 195, 200, 210

Cross off the low scores, then the high scores until there is only
one number left. That number will be the Third Quartile.
The Third Quartile is 175.

Upper and Lower Extreme

The lower extreme is the smallest number in the data set. In this
case the lower extreme is 145.
The upper extreme is the largest number in the data set. In this
case the upper extreme is 210.
