Slsarei@)) NPT AD Se AN PIAS) ©) OPE she J; x = LB (ANS ( Re iy xin <@ Weicome! Here’s our 2005 Tunebook. It’s aspirational—we don’t know all these tunes, but we are working on them, and our goal is to know them and play them, without music! However, this book is our resource and our common tune collection. And it’s always a work in progress. We encourage you to put these pages in a binder and add tunes as new ones are introduced. We make every effort to put our tunes on our website: we are the TC Celtic group at wwwyahoogroups.com. Go there, and look for the TCceltic group. You are welcome to join our email list and download music, files and photos, We meet every Monday here at our home, The Loading Dock (we love these guys for giving us such a great venue—and beer for the musicians!) We play from 7 to 9 PM, which is the time our younger musicians and audience have to leave! All we ask is that you not smoke during our playing hours— several of us are highly allergic to smoke and we will have to go home! If you play an acoustic instrument (not a horn or an electrified or amplified one), consider playing along. TC Celtic is a friendly family and we'll welcome you and introduce you all around. Ask one of the dulcimer players for a tuning note before you get started. And if you have concerns about session etiquette, check out this website: hitp://aroups. msn .com/traditionalirishmusic/sessionsetiquette,msnw Thanks for your interest! We hope you enjoy your experience with us, and will return again and again. THE MUSICIANS AND FRIENDS OF T.C. It’s commonly found in the key of G in the Irish body of traditional music. In Southern folk music, it’s usually in , sometimes as “Hop High, Ladies.” However, itis printed in The Gow Collection of Scottish ance Music (taken from manuscripts published in the early 1800's) in the key of A. By reviving fhe tune in A, Kevin has, ironically, breathed new life into it, giving it the freshness of a wholly ew piece of music. Acknowledging that our version here is exactly as he plays it, with the exception of a missing A note in the first measure, Kevin cheerfully informs us that “it’s one note short of a rip-off.” Our version is very close to the one in the Gow collection, unresolved endings included. Folklorist Samuel Bayard notes in his book Dance to the Fiddle, March to the Fife that when Americans got ahold of these old melodies they liked to resolve the endings, but the unre- solved versions are more “old world.” We have Kevin Burke to thank, again, for bringing the old world and the new together.
