REFLECTION AGAIN  8th MARCH, 2010 MONDAY

CORRECTING SPEAKING MISTAKES

I believe that correction is a very important part of language


acquisition. This week we learned when and how to correct. We handled
correction under three subtitles in terms of when to correct:

1. Interruption Correction:
* when Ls make the same mistake again and again
* when T wants Ls to be accurate.
* when presenting a new structure and Ls are practising it for the
first time.
 T should stop and remind the whole class the correct form.

2. Delayed Correction (Feedback):


* when the activity needs fluency
* when Ls are in the middle of the activity
* when the aim of the activity is to communicate
 T should correct the mistakes in the ed of the class or after the
activity finishes.

3. No Correction:
* when Ls are in the middle of a role play or group work
* when shy Ls dare to comunicate
* when Ls try to express a complex idea.
* when Ls try to express sth of personal significance or emotional
content.
 T should not correct the mistakes.

!!!! especially the last one is so important. Because sometimes


message is more important than the correct language.

Student: MY GRANDFATHER HAS DİED.


Teacher: MY GRANDFATHER DIED.
( i dont know whether i should smile at this teacher or cry for him!!)

Teacher: Make a sentence starting ‘’I’’


Student: I is the nineth.....
Teacher ( interrupting the student): we use I with ‘am’
Student: I am is the nineth letter of the alphabet.
( hanife gave this example. I really liked it. There are such kind of
teachers, unfortunately)
