The first assumption that we get from our observation once we hear in relative to

a stairway might be, the stairway that we use often like, stairways of our house, offices,
colleges, schools, apartments, shopping malls, library, museum etc. or stairways with
certain special memory. For every individual it might be different. In most of the case it is
accompanied by a situation, and we evoke a certain element, slice of the stairway or
situation respectively through which we recall the entire.
Stairway is considered as one of the most important and oldest architectural
element for its exciting part in architectural history. It is also one of the most important
transition space where transition occurs naturally in stairways throughout vertical
transportation or circulation.
Even though stairway is one of the architectural asset, currently stairways are not
given much significance. They are always considered as an addition in building planning
and are mainly concentrated on how these can be constructed quick and cheap.
Nowadays they are considered only as an element for vertical circulation.
A stairway which is comfortable for a smooth and quick vertical transportation
can be quoted as properly designed stairway, there are certain ingredients or elements
which can make a stairway beyond a properly designed one.
In this research paper, the main intention is to discover these ingredients. First
three chapters explains about the present construction practices, basic guidelines, the
evolution or history of stairways and case studies.
